Friends, Once again, the gift-giving season is upon us. How about one of these featured books - Caravaggio for the artist in your life, and a selection of YA series for the younger reader. If in doubt, you can always purchase a gift certificate for those on your list.

I'm still flogging Elena Ferrante's complete set of Neapolitan novels. I was so sure these would fly off the shelves, yet there they sit. Is she out of favor now? Too violent? Too girly?

Come see us. PLEASE come see us. Don't make me beg. We're open seven days a week now: Mon-Sat 11:00-8:00, Sunday noon to 5:00. One hour additional free parking in either garage with your purchase. My best for the holidays, Daphne

Friends, hope you all had a good Thanksgiving and have turned your heads to the pressing task at hand: finding the perfect holiday present for your family and friends. I'm posting the usual book images of new arrivals: The Neapolitan Quartet ($40) by Elena Ferrante and the gorgeous two-volume boxed set of Art of Florence ($100), both in "like new" condition.

We have added what we in the biz call "ephemera": A poster of Bruce Springsteen's 1975 performance in NYC, 14x22" ($45) and a poster of Babar's trip to the museum, 25x32" ($30).

It's almost too late to shop early, but there's still plenty of time to shop local(ly) and avoid those pesky supply chain problems.
We're now open 7 days a week, 11-8 Monday-Saturday and noon to 5 on Sundays. One additional hour of free parking in either garage with any purchase. Hope to see you soon, Daphne

Friends, The holidays are at our throats again, earlier and earlier with every passing year. Next weekend, the weekend BEFORE Thanksgiving, is now the Downtown merchants' gala holiday bash. Maybe it was this early last year? Can't remember.

Anyway, you know by now that November is the new December, and that shopping locally will alleviate your worries about supply chain problems. Many of our books are like new and will make excellent gifts. As will gift certificates.

We're now open 7 days a week: M-Sat 11-8 and Sundays noon-5. Park in one of the parking garages and receive a parking voucher for an additional hour of free parking with each purchase.

best, Daphne

Friends, Just a reminder of Golara Haghtalab's reading from her new book about her journey from Iran to C'ville - tomorrow night at 6 pm. Proof of vaccination will be required, as will masks.

In addition to experiencing the satisfaction of knowing you're supporting a local author and your local community bookstore, you can park for free in either garage for two hours! What could be better??? Hope to see you there, Daphne

Friends, a mid-week post to remind you of this Saturday's annual (except for last year) Doggie Howl-oween. We'll be passing out treats at the store all day, but the real action starts at 6:00 pm, with a parade and costume contest. This event really is a hoot - hope to see you there. Friends, last week I posted titles for adults, courtesy of my generous neighbor Ruth Mary Hall, who donated many of her favorite books to be recycled to appreciative readers.

This week I'm posting titles of kids's books, which, after all, are our specialty. The "Play with your Food" one has crazy funny photos of fruits and veggies. "How to Hold a Crocodile" includes down-to-earth suggestions for many tight spots, and Bill Bryson has written a kids' version of "A Really Short History of Nearly Everything" that's as instructive and enjoyable as his books for adults.

Come downtown next Saturday evening, 5:30-7:00 pm, for the Doggie Howloween parade and costume contest. Stop by 2nd Act for a treat for you and your dog!

Hope to see you then, Daphne

Friends, A few moments ago I wrote this post, but now I don't think it went through, so excuse the double post if indeed it is a duplicate of the first one. AARGH!

So - this is what it said - see new titles below: A Guide to Patrick O'Brian's nautical novels; a 3-volume set of Jeff and Michael Shaara's civil war novels; and a 3-volume set of "Conversations with God," all of which would make good holiday presents.

Then I included the Dilbert book, "It's Obvious you won't survive by your wits alone" as a snarky graduation present idea for your favorite slacker grandchild...

Anyway, hope to see you Tues-Sat 11-8, Sun noon-5, extra hour free parking in either garage with your purchase. best, Daphne

Friends, Have you read this book by Meg Wolitzer, "The Interestings?" It's in the news again because Meg interviewed her 91-year-old mother, Hilma Wolitzer, also a writer, about Wolitzer Sr's new book of short stories. It has the best title ever: "Today A Woman Went Mad in the Supermarket." We don't have that one, alas, but we have Meg's in case you'd like to catch up with the book buzz.

A reminder that we're open 11-8 Tuesday-Saturday, and 11-5 on Sundays. We've just plundered the JMRL library sale for a whole new collection of books in every genre. Stop by and check them out. Best wishes, Daphne

Friends, this is a test to see if this FB account is linked to our newly reactivated Instagram account, on which I posted this same photo earlier this week. Since I didn't know what I was doing, I didn't include much text.

The point of these posts is that Al Franken is on "The Only Former Senator on Tour" comedy tour. Being an admirer of second acts, I'm anxiously awaiting his outcome. Of course, if he returns to politics, it would technically be his third act... Or was politics his second act and returning would be a fourth?

Anyway, we've got this book, and his earlier "Lies and the Lying Liars who Tell Them," a "fair and balanced look at the right." Stop by for a look if his sense of humor appeals to you.

Best wishes, and a reminder that it's never too early to start thinking about holiday gifts that don't depend on disrupted supply chains, Daphne

Friends, This is the first in an occasional series I call "Books I brought home from the store." This guide to British Art Deco tableware caught my eye and I wanted to see all the photos of a favorite style. The book is clean, in good condition, and affordable: only $15. I'll take it back to the store and add it to inventory as soon as I've had my fill of all the varieties that qualify as Art Deco. Best wishes for a good week, Daphne

Friends, look what came sailing into the dock last week: multiple books on boat building. Building a boat may never have occurred to you, but why the heck not?

All you need is the lumber and a large enough space to construct it indoors during the winter. (Remember the space also has to be big enough to get the boat OUT once it's finished.) And you'll need some water to sail it on. And a way to get it there. But other than that, it's the perfect hobby...

Come in and check them out, even if you can only dream of sailing away from current (get it?) Covid concerns.

Best wishes, Daphne

Friends, Our creative director, Marsha Spain Fuller, has returned after a brief hiatus. You can see from these new greeting cards that she has refilled her well of humorous artistic excellence. These and more of her cards with book titles are available at the store. She might also take requests to illustrate your own sentiments. I say "might" because the idea just occurred to me; she doesn't know yet that I've volunteered her talents....

Thank you for your continued support of our indie enterprise,

Well, no one took us up on the offer of a punning duel, so Scott is safe for at least another week. For those of you who miss the cartoon title contest, come into the store and find them on greeting cards (blank inside; title answer on the back) that will win you friends and influence people. Yes, a copy of "How to Win Friends..." came into the store this week. Along with many more new titles.
Hope to see you on one of the days we're open 11-8, Tuesday-Saturday, or noon to 5:00 on Sunday. Best wishes, Daphne

Your way too silly Sci-fi Guy.

How great is this guy? Shall we ask him to do stand-up comedy on Monday nights? Or head-to-head pun combat with one of our customers?

FB keeps telling me that contests or giveaways boost engagement, so who wants the cartoon caption contest to return next month? Now that we're open Tues-Sat 11-8 (Sunday 11-5), you can actually come in to claim your prize. I'll stay tuned for your feedback. best, Daphne

Hi, everyone, your Sci-fi Guy has some choice new arrivals for you this week. So come on down and clean us out!
P.S. the Stephenson book isn't fiction. You'll find it in our Literary Memoir section (not that it's really a memoir, mind you), but I thought some of you might like to check it out.

Welcome Readers

We are on the historic Charlottesville downtown mall, across from the Paramount Theater, at the location of the former Read it Again, Sam. We carry the same categories of second-hand books that previous owner Dave Taylor stocked (with the exception of his specialty, military history). For those familiar with Dave’s store, you will be glad to see some familiar faces. Michael McGee, actor and teacher, is here to help with all genres. If you’ve been visiting for more than a decade, you’ll see that Michele Allen (with ten years’ experience in the book business) has returned. But wait –there’s more. Mike K Johnson, musician and IT geek, is our sci-fi specialist.

Then there’s the new owner, Daphne Spain. This store is her second act. Daphne taught in the Department of Urban and Environmental Planning at the University of Virginia for thirty years before retiring in 2016. While still teaching, she volunteered to dust books at Read it Again, Sam. And look where it got her! From duster to owner in the blink of an eye. Stop by and she’ll tell you about her grandmother’s bookstore, and show you the picture of her grandniece, who’s already reading in the bathtub at seven months.

With a combined experience of 26 years in the book business, they are first-rate book pickers. Our goal is to help you spend less time looking and more time reading. We also want you to be comfortable here. For example, you might want to meet with your book club at 2nd Act, or just hang out with other people who love books.
