Recently, SBS Alum Tom Newman visited the former home of Student Book Store to see the progress of its extensive renovation. While we miss the Store, UVA students and that grand old building, we are delighted that the space is being re-purposed and preserved to be a student center, ensuring its survival as a UVA Corner landmark for at least another century. One interesting photo in particular pays tribute to a time when the building's basement (SBS's Textbook Department) served as a dance studio with wall drawings of dancing figures.

HISTORY SAVED. From Coy Barefoot: "I'm very happy to report that the Student Bookstore sign, a familiar sight at the UVA Corner for over 20 years, has been saved and will be preserved for history. The sign went up when the bookstore opened in the summer of 1994 and didn't come down until just after 9a this morning, September 5, 2014. I will be proud to make sure it is preserved and hopefully on display at some point (if I ever realize that dream to have a Charlottesville-UVA history museum!). When the Student Bookstore closed on January 31, 2014, it sadly marked the end of an era: for the first time in nearly 180 years, there is no bookstore at the Corner selling new textbooks to students. The sign is also doubly historic, for the url "studentbook.com" was literally added on to the bottom of the sign at some point, marking the beginning of the Internet Era. It is a beautiful and significant historic artifact. My sincere thanks goes to former bookstore manager John Kelm, property owner Richard Lloyd, and my friend Tommy Garland who did the heavy lifting. I'll post some more information about the history of the bookstore below. We can't save everything, I know. But there are some things that we should do our best to preserve, so that the stories they have to tell will be shared long after we our gone."
