Three Cedars Artisans

Three Cedars Artisans Unique products made by hand, celebrating the beauty of the natural world.

Three Cedars Artisans started as an early-retirement endeavor, but has quickly become our full time passion. As lifetime lovers of art, the mountains and ocean, we have always marveled at the wonders of Mother Nature and all she has to offer. With Native American and Celtic heritage, we strive to honor the traditions and symbolic meanings of both in our work. From our hand-braided necklaces and ha

rd-carved wood and bone animal and spirit totems, we always leave a sense of ourselves in each piece we create. The majority of the materials used in our artwork is re-purposed from found or donated items whenever possible. While neither of us has a formal background in art education, our work flows from our hearts and imaginations, letting Nature guide our hands to create the shapes and textures that make up our finished pieces. We hope you enjoy our efforts to share a part of ourselves with you through our love of artistic expression. ~Craig and Lisa

After a few years away from the carving bench battling old folks problems, we finally have something to put up. As they say, it's not the destination, it's the journey. Anyway, just finished up this chap in discarded old growth Walnut. Thanks for looking and hope to return soon.

Happy Monday, everyone!

We hope to have some new items for the shop later this week - the fellas are busy with the finishing touches and last minute whatnots. Any tree lovers here? I thought some of you might enjoy this article about trees and their ability to pull gold right out of the ground. We live in such a fascinating world, don't we?

Have a great week! ~Lisa

A real living tree made of gold is something out of a fairy tale, but is there really such a thing? It’s not quite as far-fetched as you might think.

In the past we have shown you some of the work from our metal artist, Jeff, primarily small desktop copper business card easels and miniature yard tools. Jeff has been putting together some new ideas in the way of large solid copper wall art, dream catchers and sunbursts. Jeff's art is unique in many ways, but especially in the fact that he creates all of his art from copper tubes. Some of his pieces started their life in a crawl space or attic, carrying water to a heat pump or water heater. Jeff uses salvaged tube whenever he can, and begins the painstaking task of hand cutting each tube down the center in order to flatten the copper out into a sheet before beginning each piece. Each individual piece of copper that goes into one of his sculptures, leaves, chains, ropes, dream catcher webs, and the pins used to hold it all together, are handcrafted by him, and start their journey as a copper tube. One of his recent pieces is being featured in our Etsy shop, and would make a fine gift for the art lover in your life. It is a nice size piece of wall art ready to hang, at 27 inches long and almost 12 inches wide. Because it’s solid copper, it will take on a beautiful patina over time, and is suitable for hanging either inside on a wall, or outside in your yard or garden, as it will not rust and needs no maintenance. If you prefer your copper art to remain brilliant and shiny, a small amount of metal polish and a little effort will keep it looking bright for many years to come. Link to the Etsy listing for the dream catcher is in the comment section of the photos.

Earlier in the month we told you we would be introducing some new styles of folk art expression here at Three Cedars that you hadn’t seen from us in the past. The idea began months ago when we were designing a Fairy Cottage for a customer who also wanted some accessories that matched the small scale of the cottage. We made some small tables, a bench and a wishing well. We started thinking, why not make the accessories on a scale more suited for use on their own, on a mantle, a desk or table?

We’re calling them Day Dreamers, and each should elicit a feeling of relaxation when you look at them. Something to help you take a few minutes of mental solitude during your hectic day, a chance for a brief escape.

The first in the Day Dreamer series is our Wishing Well. A little over 7 inches tall, and 4 inches across the base, it’s the perfect size for a spot on a desk, without dominating the space. All handcrafted, we laid each stone, built the trusses and shingled the roof from natural found oak wood materials around our shop here in North Carolina, and capped the roof ridge with birch bark and moss. We also made the crank that raises and lowers the copper bucket, which has started to develop some beautiful greenish patina. The well is built on a ¼” thick birch plywood base that has been felted to protect whatever it’s sitting on. The sign across the front is hand carved and can be personalized with your name, etc. Whether you put a wish in the bucket and lower it into the well, hoping it will come true, or put a worry in the bucket and lower it, hoping it will help you let it go, it’s harmless fun. And sometimes, we all need to Day Dream a little.

Check back soon for the next in the Day Dreamer series. It will be a different scenario entirely, but guaranteed to be very relaxing. Think sand and………….

We found this little guy hanging out in a long stretch of old growth walnut wood, so we decided to see if we could coax him out to join our forest family. His name is Marlo and he’s a tall boy, around 23 inches high, 4 inches wide and a little over 2 inches thick. He would be happiest hanging on an interior wall, or on a covered porch/patio. He’s been rubbed with several coats of carnauba wax for luster, but he’s not waterproof and can’t be left outside. We thought he had a Nordic look, so we carved his name under his beard using the Runic Alphabet. Once he’s fitted with the proper hanging hardware on back he’ll be moved to our Etsy shop. Thanks for looking folks!

We've also been working on a series of homes for the Tree Faeries that have been displaced whenever a sacred tree falls. According to Irish legend, when you find a Faerie Tree, it will have stones around its base to protect those dwelling in it. These trees are also believed to be the gateways between the world of mortals, and that of the Faeries, or Wee Folk. It is said, whomever cuts down a Faerie Tree will face a lifetime of bad luck. Rumor has it the famous car manufacture DeLorean chopped down a Faerie Tree in order to build their factory in Dunmurry, on the outskirts of Belfast. It's believed DeLorean failed due to bad luck from chopping down the tree. We'll be adding these to our Etsy shop as they become available. Some of the homes, or cottages, will be made from the same trees that some of our Tree Spirits came from, and will therefore share a bit of the same Faerie Magic, or luck as the mortal folk refer to it. If anyone would like to pair a Faerie Home with a kindred Tree Spirit of the same tree, we would be happy to make the arrangement, and offer a discounted price for the set. Here is a recently finished home from the same uprooted Oak as Eastman. Thanks for looking!

If you don't already know, we here at Three Cedars Artisans are tree huggers of sorts. When creating our wood-art, tree spirits, forest fellows, yard guardians, woodwose, or whatever you like to call them, we only use natural materials from already felled timbers. We would never intentionally take down a perfectly good tree just to have carving material. Each living tree has a spirit or personality that develops as it grows and interacts with its environment. You can determine the age of a given tree by counting the number of rings visible in a cross section cut of the trunk. Some growth rings are closer together, or farther apart than others, indicating different growth cycles of that tree based on the environment through the years, temperature, drought cycles, etc. When creating our wood-art, or liberating a new friend from their "timber tomb" as we sometimes like to refer to it, we look for signs of that developed spirit or personality, and use it as a part of the character of each individual piece.

With that in mind, the newest member to our freedom forest comes from our own property. A few years ago we had a bad storm roll through our area that was blowing in from the coast. A large Oak tree took a hit and was uprooted. After some years in the seasoning pile, Eastman called out and made his presence known. He came from a large trunk section, so we had to halve the section in order to get him onto the carving bench. We could see where the woodworms and some fungus had made themselves at home over the years, adding some extra character to his already battered spirit.

Eastman's personality quickly developed, and it was apparent that Mother Nature was a factor in his felling. From his look of surprise, to his windblown hair and mustache, his expression tells his story. He's a big boy, tipping the scales at a little over 9 pounds, and standing 12 inches high, 9 inches wide and a little over 4 inches deep.

Eastman will be moving to our Etsy shop later today looking for a new Forest-Forever Home. We'll post his direct link after he's settled in.

Thanks for looking!
