From drawing to reality

I just wanted to share with you guys a little bit about my process! I came up with the idea of something spiderweb themed months ago. I usually mock up my designs in Procreate. I have a time-lapse video of the first few drawings that I did that I wanted to share to show you my process. It’s in the comments!

When it comes to designing lace, you have to be cognizant of a few different things. First of all, you have to make sure that you are choosing elements that will translate correctly to the lace, especially on a small scale. There have been so many times that I’ve had an idea and it just hasn’t worked out.

Secondly, you have to be sure that your design is going to read properly on a bow, which is my number one audience obviously! That was something that I really struggled with with the pumpkins and that’s why I went the direction that I did with them! This was no different. Too many details and it became muddy and I needed to be sure that the lines were thick enough to read correctly.

And of course, there was the process of creating the sample. Something with this much detail can be a little bit difficult under the machine on such a fine mesh. As you can tell, we started with a different type of fabric and ended up switching to the mesh later on. We were unsure that the mesh would have worked out, which is why we started with an organza. You can also see where we were deciding how to cut the organza if it was going to be on an organza. My biggest fear with the organza was fraying at the edges, so I sent back the sample and asked them to please use a finer tipped needle so we could sample it on a mesh instead, and it turned out perfectly!

Here you can see the undyed sample because all of the lace is hand dyed at the end of production!

And finally, there is the finished product.

I hope you enjoy all of this, and I will see you all tomorrow at noon for the drop!

✨ A little peek into my life before bows ✨

Before The Bows and the Bees, I spent years designing and building costumes for theater productions all over the country 🎭

I worked on small Broadway stints including The Lion King and Legally Blonde: The Musical, and spent most of my career working in regional theater — especially at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago, where I worked as a textile painter and dyer, as well as sewing and building costumes.

One thing a lot of people don’t realize is that textile painting and dyeing is actually a very specialized field. There were only a small handful of us in the Chicago area doing that kind of work professionally, and it required an incredible amount of knowledge about textiles, fiber content, fabric behavior, color theory, and construction. What was especially cool about it was that I got opportunities to work on a lot of amazing pieces for a lot of amazing actors some of which are household names!

At one point, I even had a job opportunity to move to New York full-time for theater work. As much as I loved walking through Mood Fabrics pretending I was on Project Runway 😅, I ultimately decided to go to grad school instead and earned my Master’s degree in theatrical costume design and technology.

There, I studied even more textile work, painting, dyeing, wig design and construction, and costume design while continuing to work professionally in theater. Eventually I came back to Illinois, continued working at the Goodman for several years, and later taught theatrical costume design, costume construction, and scenic painting at the college level as well.

Then I had my daughter ❤️

And somewhere between raising babies and wanting to stay home with my kids… I started a little bow business.

What’s funny is that even though my life looks completely different now, the heart of what I do really hasn’t changed all that much. I’ve always loved texture, color, detail, textiles, and creating things that feel unique and special.

So when people ask why I care so much about quality, construction, materials, trims, lace, fibers, and sourcing… this is why ✨

Here’s a cute little peek at some costumes I designed for a production of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged. It’s a silly modern comedy that is not actually Shakespeare, but was a really fun production at one of the summer theaters that I worked at for many years. Fun fact- we used the pumpkin breech pattern that was also used on The Addams Family on Broadway production so we didn’t have to recreate it from scratch because pumpkin breeches are, like, really intense to make 😆😆😆

Support the original maker 🤍

Every design you see here started from scratch- sketched, swatched, tested, and brought to life piece by piece. This isn’t mass-produced or pulled from somewhere else. It’s created in here 🧠✍️, by me.

The reality is, once something original is put out into the world, it doesn’t always stay that way. And when original work gets copied over and over, it slowly pushes out the people who are actually creating it in the first place.

This little business is what allows me to be home with my kids, to show up for them, and to build something that’s truly mine. When you support original work, you’re not just buying a bow… you’re choosing to keep that kind of creativity alive.

And that matters more than I can say 🤍

Thank you all for being here!

A little behind the scenes action for you…

This is my video sent to me by a supplier when I inquired about ribbon because I hear that many of these scalloped ribbons on the market aren’t crispy enough! And these are CRISPY.

I’m a Virgo. And a perfectionist. And I have high functioning anxiety. I would never offer anything that I wasn’t happy with to my customers. So sometimes I go a little overboard on quality control.

Anyways, I’m not going to offer a ton of scalloped ribbons… but if I offered this color they mocked up for me, some white and one other custom option, would people have interest in a drop?
