From drawing to reality
I just wanted to share with you guys a little bit about my process! I came up with the idea of something spiderweb themed months ago. I usually mock up my designs in Procreate. I have a time-lapse video of the first few drawings that I did that I wanted to share to show you my process. It’s in the comments!
When it comes to designing lace, you have to be cognizant of a few different things. First of all, you have to make sure that you are choosing elements that will translate correctly to the lace, especially on a small scale. There have been so many times that I’ve had an idea and it just hasn’t worked out.
Secondly, you have to be sure that your design is going to read properly on a bow, which is my number one audience obviously! That was something that I really struggled with with the pumpkins and that’s why I went the direction that I did with them! This was no different. Too many details and it became muddy and I needed to be sure that the lines were thick enough to read correctly.
And of course, there was the process of creating the sample. Something with this much detail can be a little bit difficult under the machine on such a fine mesh. As you can tell, we started with a different type of fabric and ended up switching to the mesh later on. We were unsure that the mesh would have worked out, which is why we started with an organza. You can also see where we were deciding how to cut the organza if it was going to be on an organza. My biggest fear with the organza was fraying at the edges, so I sent back the sample and asked them to please use a finer tipped needle so we could sample it on a mesh instead, and it turned out perfectly!
Here you can see the undyed sample because all of the lace is hand dyed at the end of production!
And finally, there is the finished product.
I hope you enjoy all of this, and I will see you all tomorrow at noon for the drop!
