For the last 15 years, we’ve been proud to call Charleston home — and one thing that never stops amazing us is the history found right here in our community.

Many people know Memorial Day as a time to honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. But few realize that one of the earliest and most historically significant Memorial Day observances took place right here in Charleston on May 1, 1865.

Newly freed Black Americans, alongside Northern abolitionist allies, gathered to honor 257 Union soldiers buried at the former “Martyrs of the Race Course” cemetery — decorating graves, holding a parade, and recognizing the sacrifice of those who fought for freedom.

It’s another reminder that Charleston isn’t just rich with history — it helped shape our nation’s story.

This Memorial Day, we remember and honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. 🇺🇸
