On this day in 1870, the Fifteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States was ratified, guaranteeing the right to vote regardless of race and intending to ensure, with the Fourteenth Amendment, the civil rights of former slaves. We are excited to kick off Black History Month with my absolute favorite Charleston story! Born into slavery, Robert Smalls was on a Confederate slave transport ship, The C.S.S. Planter in Charleston Harbor on May 13, 1862. When the crew left the ship, he commandeered the ship, sailed it through confederate waters and into Union hands, thus freeing all onboard. His actions led to convincing Abraham Lincoln to allow African Americans to serve in the Union Army. After the war, he returned to Beaufort and was elected to the US House of Representatives, founded the South Carolina Republican Party, and was a five-term member of Congress. He became the first African American to captain a vessel in the U.S. service, served as Major General in the South Carolina militia and the largest watercraft in the US Army, LSV-8 is now named after him. My favorite part, however, is that Robert Smalls returned to Beaufort and purchased the home in which he was born a slave and lived there the rest of his life. When Mrs. McKee, the wife of his former enslaver, became ill late in life, he allowed her come back and remain there, as she had dementia and it was familiar to her. These are mere snippets - we encourage you to read voraciously about this amazing man! In the meantime, you can find these and many other great historic coasters at AtlanticCoasters.com or find us and

On January 28, Woodrow Wilson signed into law the Coast Guard Act of 1915, creating the U.S. Coast Guard as it is today. Originally established as the Revenue Marine Service in 1790 by my guy, Alexander Hamilton, it transformed over the years to finally become the USCG that we know and love. We are officially licensed with the Inited States Coast Guard - If you can’t get down to see us at you can shop our great Coast Guard selections online at AtlanticCoasters.com. Scroll to see an awesome photo of the late, great boxer and Coast Guard commander Jack Dempsey, overseeing young guardsmen sparring while heading to the Theater of War in WW II
