About the Founder
I’ve always loved the outdoors and the quiet beauty of nature. My interest in birds began while I was working as a PGA professional at Bulls Bay Golf Club, when I noticed a small heron fishing along a pond. Curious to learn more, I used the Merlin Bird ID app and discovered it was a Green Heron. That moment sparked something in me, a fascination that quickly grew into a lifelong

passion for birds and the natural world. As I began logging my sightings in eBird, I discovered an amazing community of birders, from beginners to experts, all sharing the same joy of discovery. Birding soon became a part of my daily life and inspired me to explore Charleston’s parks, wetlands, and coastal habitats, seeing the Lowcountry through new eyes. There’s a real peace and happiness that comes from watching birds in their element. Holy City Birding was born from that feeling and from a desire to share it with others. Whether leading tours, working with kids, or introducing others to birding, my goal is to inspire curiosity, wonder, and appreciation for the world around us.

Why Pitt Street Bridge?

After hundreds of visits and more than a decade exploring this place, I’m still amazed by what you can find here.

Ospreys pulling fish from the water, Clapper Rails slipping through the marsh, shorebirds working the mudflats, Black Skimmers cruising the creeks — and sometimes a few dolphins passing through.

I’ve put everything I’ve learned into my new Ultimate Birding Guide to Pitt Street Bridge, including when to visit, how the tides change the birding, what to look for throughout the year, and 20 of my favorite birds to find here.

🍂 Fall migration has officially begun!

One of the first songbirds to begin heading south each year is the Louisiana Waterthrush. Although they nest in parts of South Carolina, they don’t breed around Charleston. By late summer, they begin passing through our shaded swamps on their way to Central America and the Caribbean.

I filmed this bird yesterday in a shaded swamp in Park West, Mount Pleasant. It’s a great reminder that migration is happening all around us—even in our own neighborhoods.

Have you noticed any early fall migrants yet?

✈️ The Top Gun of the Marsh.

Most people think terns only catch fish—but Gull-billed Terns have a different strategy.

Watch as this incredible hunter patrols the salt marsh at Pitt Street Bridge in Mount Pleasant, swooping in to sn**ch fiddler crabs with remarkable precision. 🦀

Have you ever watched one hunt?
