Hey, all. Jim here. I was reminded this morning that today is the 2 year anniversary of the delivery of the very first Axis Mundi dining table.
What is now a signature item in our collection was purpose-designed for clients in Downer's Grove, IL, who reached out to me looking for a table that would seat 14 and would complement the interior of their new home.
Based on the measurements of the room and the desired 14-seat capacity, I knew I'd need to push the legs of the table all the way out to the extreme corners to allow for maximum leg room and that I would need the strength of an all-steel structure to handle the span.
Steel was already an integral texture in the adjacent fireplace, and the white-tinted white oak, which I chose for strength as much as aesthetics, plays nicely with the clean, understated tones of the fireplace's stone surround.
In the last two years, I have created numerous variations on the Axis Mundi for my clients. Currently in process in our magic lab, I have a small Axis Mundi that repurposes the top of a table built by the client's grandfather, the largest Axis Mundi (and largest table that I've built) - a massive 5' x 16' behemoth with an African Mahogany top, and the first two of a collection of 40 (yes, 40!!) 4' x 12' Black Walnut-topped Axis Mundi tables for a new event space.
Problem-solving plants seeds. One of the greatest rewards of creative entrepreneurship is getting to watch them grow. Now, what can we create for you?
