These detectives stepped in just in time to save a Hauppauge man’s life savings.

A 69-year-old man was targeted by scammers posing as federal agents who told him his financial accounts were vulnerable and instructed him to purchase gold bars in order to protect his assets.

The man withdrew money from his retirement account and was attempting to purchase $466,000 in gold when Suffolk County Police Financial Crimes Unit detectives were notified, intervened, and stopped the transaction.

Thank you to Detectives Dan Pagano and Tom Perillo who stepped in just in time to prevent this man from losing his hard-earned retirement savings.

This is a reminder that no government agency official will ever ask you to send them money to protect you or your cash.

If you feel you have been the victim of a scam, call 631-852-COPS to file a report.

⚠️🚨 DON'T BECOME A VICTIM OF FINANCIAL FRAUD‼️
The "Gold Bar Scam" (or Gold Courier Scam) is one of the fastest-growing financial frauds in New York, and Suffolk County law enforcement has issued major alerts regarding its surge. If you or a loved one has been targeted, contact the SCPD Financial Crimes Unit immediately at (631) 852-6821, or call the Suffolk County District Attorney's Financial Crimes Bureau at (631) 853-5602.How the Gold Bar Scam WorksCriminals use highly sophisticated psychological manipulation to target residents—especially seniors—and drain their life savings. The Scare: It begins with a fake computer pop-up (often pretending to be Microsoft tech support) or an urgent phone call claiming your bank accounts have been hacked or compromised. The Impersonation: Scammers pretend to be federal agents (FBI, IRS), tech support, or even local police. They may spoof their caller ID to make it look like they are actually calling from the Suffolk County Police Department. The Liquidating Demand: They convince the victim that the only way to "protect" their assets from the hackers is to withdraw their savings, buy physical gold bars, and hand them over to a "government courier" for safekeeping. The Secrecy & Wiretapping: They swear the victim to absolute secrecy under threat of arrest. In a recent Suffolk County case, detectives discovered scammers were actually listening to the victim through her compromised computer while she spoke to real police.Real-Life Impact in Suffolk CountyA Staggering Case Interrupted: In July 2026, Suffolk County Police detectives successfully intervened and stopped an elderly Western Suffolk woman from handing over $140,000 in gold bars. Detectives managed to intercept the transaction and cancel her checks right before a scam courier arrived.Massive Losses: Other Long Island seniors have not been as fortunate, with regional losses totaling millions of dollars. Across New York, the NYPD estimates this specific scheme has defrauded retirees of over $100 million.New Local Legislation: Due to the severity of this fraud, Suffolk County lawmakers proposed legislation requiring physical precious metal dealers to display prominent scam warning signs and enforce a 48-hour hold on large, first-time gold purchases.Crucial Steps to Stay SafeNo legitimate government agency or bank will ever tell you to buy gold, convert your assets, or hand over valuables to a courier.Never grant remote access to your computer to someone who called or messaged you out of the blue.If you see a suspicious alert on your screen, shut down or unplug your computer immediately to cut off any remote control or listening capabilities. If you are in the middle of a suspicious situation, hang up the phone and report it to the police or file a complaint online with the Federal Trade Commission or the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center.

🇺🇸 Fun History Fact! 🇺🇸
Many historians consider July 2, 1776 to be the "real" Independence Day because it's the day the Continental Congress voted to break away from Great Britain. Two days later, on July 4, the final text of the Declaration of Independence was approved, and that date became the one we celebrate.
No matter which date you prefer, it's a great week to honor the birth of the United States. Happy Independence Week! 🎆🇺🇸
250 years ago, on July 2nd, 1776, the Second Continental Congress voted to declare independence from Great Britain.
John Adams wrote to his wife the next day:
“The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America.—I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.”
Well, not quite.
On July 4th, the delegates adopted the Declaration of Independence — and that has been the day for celebrations ever since.
