Next Page Books is a locally-owned independent bookstore in the heart of the New Bohemia neighborhood of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. From its setting in CSPS Hall, a registered historic landmark built in 1890, customers may browse a curated collection of books and sideline items in a warm, intimate, and inviting space. The bookstore opened July 1, 2012 and was subsequently purchased by Bart Carithers in D

ecember 2015. The shop has built a large and loyal local customer base that extends throughout eastern Iowa and beyond. The shop offers a healthy selection of fiction, non-fiction, young adult, and children’s books. If a customer cannot find the title they're looking for, staff will place a special order and, in most instances, have the book(s) available in two-to-five business days. The shop is open 10am to 6pm Monday through Saturday and 11am to 4pm on Sunday.

From our family to you and yours, have a happy, healthy, and merry Christmas.

Every business believes they have the best customers. Well, add us to that list. The support you have shown this shop during the holiday season, and, in fact, the entire year has been overwhelming. I cannot thank you enough. We value and appreciate each and every one of you.

Thank you & best wishes,

Bart, Ellie & Frank

It’s Christmas Eve which means the shop will close at 4pm today. Like you, I need to get home and finish wrapping presents. In the meantime, I may enjoy a glass, or two. Don’t judge, retail is hard!

This is Chad. Chad was the first customer to walk through the door this morning. As a reward for “breaking the ice”, he earned a discount on his purchase. Thanks, Chad. We applaud your willingness to brave the elements.

I broke my cardinal rule by parking directly in front of the store. If you’re out there looking for the perfect parking space this morning, please accept my apologies.

Anyway, I’m here at the shop tackling a ton of projects so, if you’re in need of a last-minute gift/book or a place to warm up, pop in and say, “Hello.” I should be here until at least 4pm.

And, again, sorry about taking the best parking spot in New Bohemia.

Unless you have completed extensive Arctic survival training, we suggest you stay home and have a grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup for lunch, binge watch your favorite shows and, naturally, read a good book.

For those of you who are intrepid adventurers willing to risk life and limb, we’ll be here until 2pm today, and then play it by ear (call ahead). However, we don’t advise popping in. UPS is making a big delivery today and we’ll notify you if your special order has arrived.

Be safe!

If you haven’t already, this might be a good day to pick up your books for Jólabókaflóð (Yo-la-bok-a-flot), the Icelandic tradition of gifting and reading books on Christmas Eve. We hope you’ll consider making the “flood of books” part of your family’s annual holiday tradition.

NOTE: Provided my car starts in the morning and conditions haven’t deteriorated to a crisis level, I plan on being in store tomorrow between 10am and 6pm to receive our UPS book delivery. I will contact folks whose special orders have arrived and encourage them to pick their book(s) up on Friday (after the storm winds down) or Saturday.

Well, I’ll be damned! The bookstore has shown up in another publication – this one with a focus on the livability of Cedar Rapids. Thankfully, they had the common sense to include Frank (photo), and I didn’t make any major verbal gaffes. Dodged another bullet.

NOTE: Big thanks to Tyler Olson for dropping off his copy of the magazine.

Still searching for holiday gifts? Here’s a sampling of our best-selling books this season. Think of it as our Holiday Gift Guide for last minute shoppers. Remember, books make great gifts!

NOTE: The weather forecast for the end of the week does not look promising. However, I will be in store Thursday thru Saturday for anyone needing to purchase books or pick up a special order. I've been in contact with distributors and publishers to check the status of our remaining special orders. I will call/message folks on Friday if it appears an order has been delayed. Please accept my apologies, in advance, if that were to happen to your order.

If you are searching for a special holiday gift, we have just the ticket.

Local artists Heather English (fiber) and Barb Thompson (watercolor & acrylics) will be in store between 11am and 4pm on Sunday, December 18. Their work has been shown throughout the region and both women have developed a strong and loyal following.

Pop in Sunday for the art and, of course, the books. See you then!

It’s slick outside and we don’t mean trendy or cool. Be careful if you are out and about.

If you do find your way to Next Page Books, consider our signed first editions of Lessons by critically acclaimed British author Ian McEwan. Among his seventeen previous novels, McEwan has written Amsterdam, Atonement, The Children Act, and On Chesil Beach. He won the Booker Prize for Atonement in 1998.

"A luminous, beautifully written, and gripping book about lives imperfectly lived. McEwan's new novel is ranging, ambitious, teasingly autobiographical, and unsettling in the manner of his best work, a story of monstrous behavior set against major tides of the last 80 years. Roland Baines, a kind of spectator to history, is our hero [and] is both haunted by trauma and able to push away from it, toward love, parenthood, forgiveness, grace." (Vogue)

And remember – drive, walk, run, and bike safely today. Winter has arrived a few days early.

Four years ago, five people gathered in the shop to form the Next Page Book & Social Club. Fast forward four years and that small group has grown to twenty-plus members who meet monthly to share their love of books, wine, and appetizers.

The club met at Parlor City Pub & Eatery last night to celebrate the end of another year together, share favorite books, and make reading selections for the first four months of 2023. NPB&SC meets the third Wednesday of each month at 6:30pm and one and all are welcome to attend.

Here are the books that members selected to begin 2023:

January: What Happened to Paula by Katherine Dykstra
February: Anxious People by Fredrik Backman
March: Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus
April: Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart

On a personal note, I cannot begin to thank everyone who has played a role in the success of the club. In my wildest dreams, I never thought we’d have twenty people gather monthly to discuss books. You have made an old geezer exceedingly happy. Thank you!

Oh, and a huge thanks to Parlor City for accommodating us last night. The staff and service were outstanding!

Frank’s wish list is short this year:

1) treats
2) climbing tower
3) bird videos

He’s easy to shop for. But I’m not waiting to the last minute to finish my holiday shopping. Good advice if you want to find everything on your loved ones’ wish lists. Let us know if we can help.

The store offers a curated selection of fiction, non-fiction, young adult, and children’s books in a warm and inviting environment. The shop may be small but it’s bursting at the seams with best-sellers and award winners, along with greeting cards and other sideline items.

If a customer cannot find the book they’re looking for, we can place a special order and have it in their hands within two-to-five business days. There’s no additional charge for a special order.
