Tariff Turmoil and the Future of Fireworks 2025 💣💥
The following is a timeline of correspondence from some of our fireworks distributors as well as general information obtained from various sources. This information is for informational purposes ONLY and not intended to spark debate or political conversations. We ask that if you comment, that you do so with respect. Respect to our business, those who support it, and the community in which we have happily been a part of for over 50 years. We also ask that you respectfully leave your personal political views out of this thread. Again, this is intended to provide information to our customers, those who look forward to the 4th of July fireworks season, and so that everyone can plan accordingly with the information at hand.
April 4, 2025 - As we are sure you are well aware, in the past several weeks President Trump announced reciprocal tariffs with the United States regular trade partners. These tariffs will take effect beginning as early as April 3rd, 2025 at midnight, and are to be fully implemented no later than April 9th, 2025. As of the initial tariff implementation, Fireworks were to be assessed a 20% existing tariff + 34% reciprocal tariff + 5.3% standard duty for a total import tax of 59.3%. This is charged on the value of the merchandise at the time it is loaded onto an import container prior to transportation from its place of manufacture (China).
April 10, 2025 - There have been significant increases in China tariffs within the past month. We cannot predict additional tariffs or other market conditions that may change today, tomorrow, or in the coming months. In addition to the now 150.3% import tax, fireworks suppliers are starting to suspend shipment of goods until further notice, and the ocean freight carriers, more concerning, are also starting to refuse new bookings.
General information from various sources -
*In February, the Trump administration announced it would levy a 10% tariff on Chinese products imported to the U.S. In March, the administration added another 10% for a total of 20%. The 125% recently announced by the White House brings the total to 145%.
*The numbers tell a stark story for consumer-grade fireworks (product we sell), which now carry a 109.3% tariff.
China has announced retaliatory tariffs of 125%.
As you can see, the numbers vary based on the sources, but the common theme is that there is (at this time) a definite imposed tariff. With all this being said, we have absolutely no idea how this will all shake out. What we do know, from what we’ve been told, is that prices will be up ⬆️ and inventory will be down ⬇️.
We will continue to update everyone as things progress, for now, we would rather be upfront with the potential scenario than blindside everyone once our season officially starts. As always, we appreciate you, your support over the past five decades, and your understanding as we work through this.❤️
