June 1st is dedicated to Reef Day in support of the ocean's most amazing and largest ecosystem! Founded in 2019 thanks to Raw Elements USA. Here are some fun facts: Around 25% of all marine species live on coral reefs, but the reefs make up less than 1% of the ocean. ๐ They are relatives to jellyfish and anemones, have existed for over 400 million years. ๐ชผ Though located underwater, they are close to the surface because reefs require sunlight to grow and thrive. ๐ชธ Has led to the creation of medicines including anticancer agents. ๐ฆ Largest living organism on the planet, can be seen from outer space. ๐ข With climate change happening, many coral reefs are under stress and have begun to bleach in the sun. Scorching them so that they are at risk of dying. 25 different species are listed as threatened/endangered. ๐ฆ Abandoned fishing nets get entangled and kill reef organisms which then breaks and damages the remaining reef. ๐ก Coral reefs are a vital source of food for at least half a billion people. ๐ฆ
