Alcova Fishing Report
February 18, 2024

Not sure whether we would be able to find ice at all, we struck out west from Casper early Sunday morning. We decided to take the route around Alcova so that we could atleast say “we looked for ice”, we were excitedly surprised to find 4” of strong clear ice. All be it, only a few hundred feet from open water!

Fishing was good to great all morning long as we caught on tip ups and jaw jackers in 3-20 fow. We found that setting our depth to 7’ or so was the ticket!

I think that may be the last time we make it onto Alcova this season, a happy ending to a short season!

Ice Fishing Report:

By some miracle, we all made it to our pickup trucks before the sun rise yet again. Early enough even that it was still dark when we arrived lakeside!

We choose to spend our time relatively close to the marina in preparation for the derby. Fish were caught all over between 6-40 FOW at varying levels of water column. I wish I could say we found a pattern, but it was pretty random/sporatic.

Ice quality was great, we were on over 12” everywhere we went. Be weary tho, there is a large crack and open water that spans the entire bay, parallel to the dam. I hope that it closes up by the derby, but I have my doubts. There is no snow anywhere! We packed up and left early around noon, we had waterfowl on our minds.

Beautiful weather in the forecast, but I’m leaving the snow machine at home. I hope to see you at the HAWG Ice Fishing Derby derby folks!

Ice Fishing Report:

We left town under the vail of darkness, once again, in the pursuit of frozen water. We had plans to stop at Alcova Reservoir, praying the recent cold snap had been enough to form some good ice in a few of the bays.

Negative temperatures also played a role in how risky/far from the truck we were willing to go. We were happily surprised to find the lake capped when we rolled in around 7AM and no other weary fisherpeople in sight.

We got out lines in the water, standard fare of 50/50 minnows on jigs and minnows on trebles. It wasn’t long before we were into the fish! Side note, we were sitting on 3-5 inches at black beach, and we didn’t venture out very far.

After the initial morning bite, it slowed down. We played around with depth and column until we stumbled upon fishing at about 7’ in 16FOW. That was the ticket. We were in the fish until we left around 11AM.

We also got a surprise gift from the fish gods in the form of my PB walleye, and my first walleye in this lake!

On top of the world, we struck out back for Casper, and I wasn’t long before the ol’ pickup bit the dust right on the highway! A quick tow and a few YouTube videos later and it turned out to be a loose connector 🤦‍♂️

All in all, a very productive trip and good news: we have safe ice at Alcova!

Spent some time testing out a bit of . It was a family expedition, but that didn’t stop us from catching a few on Miff’s scud bug. As I’m using these baits , I really appreciate the size options, their pre-scented nature and the fact that they have good motion in the tendrils, even with the smallest baits.

I’ll definitely be taking these out for some night fishing, as they are full glow!
