Our Plant of the Week is Polemonium, better known as Jacob’s Ladder. If you’re looking to bring some serious texture and ecological interest to a damp, shaded corner of your yard, this Midwest native is an absolute must-have.

The name comes from the ladder-like arrangement of the foliage, which creates a lush, architectural look in the garden even when the plant isn't in bloom. Right now, these beauties are showing off clusters of delicate, bell-shaped purple flowers that carry a soft, sweet scent.

Why It Thrives in Our Area:
While it can tolerate some sun if kept wet, this is a go-to choice for those part-shade spots in your yard that need a pop of color.
If you have a low spot in your garden or soil that tends to trap moisture, Jacob's Ladder will feel right at home.
This is a fantastic spreading perennial. Over time, it will happily fill out a nice amount of space, creating a beautiful, low-maintenance ground cover.

Even after the spring blooms fade, that variegated, structural foliage stays clean and sharp all season long. Stop by Barn Owl this week to wander the perennial benches and see that ladder-like foliage in person.

Glow-in-the-dark flowers? Guess what… they’re a real thing. 🌙

Meet the Firefly Petunia, a bioluminescent petunia that looks like a sweet white flower during the day, then gives off a soft green glow after dark. No batteries. No blacklight. No glow paint. Just plant science doing something pretty magical.

The glow comes from genes inspired by naturally bioluminescent mushrooms, giving the plant its own gentle “living light.” The brightest glow usually shows up on the newest blooms, buds, leaves, and stems, especially when the plant has had plenty of sun and you view it in total darkness.

Would you grow one in your garden or keep it on the patio just to show it off at night?

Something we've heard a lot over the years: "I drove all the way out and you didn't have what I needed."

Our Plants page on barnowlgarden.com is a running look at what we actually have in stock. Every time a new delivery comes in, we post the arrival list with the date so you know exactly what's fresh and what's available before you make the trip. The full inventory is organized by category and searchable, so you're not scrolling through a wall of text to find what you're looking for.

It's not a shopping cart. You still come in, walk the lot, and pick what looks right. This just gets you here with a plan.

Plant of the Week: David Austin Roses

If you love the romance of a classic rose garden but dread the high-maintenance headache that usually comes with it, we have your solution. This week, we are highlighting our fresh arrival of David Austin Roses, featuring stunning varieties like the deep, velvety crimson Darcey Bussell.

David Austin roses are bred to give you the absolute best of both worlds. They carry the old-world charm, heavy petal counts, and incredible fragrances of classic English roses, but with modern resilience bred right in.

Why They Excel in the Chicago Area:
Unlike older varieties that get leggy and sparse, these maintain a tighter, more compact habit that looks great in a landscape border or a large patio pot.
They are naturally tougher against the typical fungal issues that plague Midwest summers.
They stand up to our harsh DuPage County freezes much better than standard hybrid teas.

A Quick Tip for Success:
While they are significantly easier to grow than standard roses, they still need a little more love than a basic Knock Out shrub. To keep them thriving, plant them in rich, well-draining soil and give them plenty of sun. When winter rolls around, give them some extra attention by huddling mulch or fallen leaves around the base to protect the root systems.

Stop by the garden center this week to take a stroll through the shade house, catch a sniff of these blooms in person, and pick out the perfect variety for your yard.

Your Black Walnut tree isn't killing your garden. It's just very good at being a Black Walnut.

Juglone, the chemical these trees produce, shuts down most common plants. But a whole world of Illinois natives evolved right alongside them and genuinely don't mind. Serviceberry, Spicebush, Wild Ginger, Virginia Bluebells, Witch Hazel. The Luna Moth uses it as a host tree. Eastern Screech Owls nest in the older ones.
