Breathing easier at home โ€” that's the goal for every ALS patient we serve. ๐Ÿ’™

Respiratory technology has transformed dramatically. Smart ventilators now adapt to each patient's unique breathing patterns, support both non-invasive and invasive ventilation, and connect directly to our clinical team for remote monitoring โ€” so we can often catch and address changes before a patient even feels symptomatic.

We believe ALS shouldn't define where you can go or how you live. Our latest article explores the smart tech making that possible.

If you or someone you love is navigating ALS, share this with them. Knowledge is a powerful thing.

For individuals living with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), respiratory health is the cornerstone of maintaining independence and quality of life. As the disease progresses and weakens the muscles responsible for breathing, the transition to mechanical ventilation can feel daunting. However, th

What is a Registered Sleep Technician?

A Registered Sleep Technologist (RST), also known as a Registered Sleep Technician, is a healthcare professional who is trained to conduct diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for sleep disorders. An RST works under the supervision of a physician specializing in sleep medicine, typically in a sleep laboratory or clinic.

An RST's primary responsibilities include setting up and operating equipment to monitor patients during sleep, performing physiological and diagnostic tests, and analyzing the results. They are also responsible for documenting and reporting the findings to the physician and assisting in the development of treatment plans.

To become a Registered Sleep Technologist, one must complete an accredited sleep technology education program and pass a certification exam offered by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) or the American Board of Sleep Medicine (ABSM). An RST must also maintain their certification by completing continuing education requirements.

Overall, RSTs play a critical role in the diagnosis and management of sleep disorders, helping patients achieve better sleep and improving their overall health and quality of life.

What is Chronic respiratory failure (CRF)?

Chronic respiratory failure (CRF) is a medical condition characterized by the inability of the lungs to adequately oxygenate the blood and remove carbon dioxide from the body over an extended period of time. CRF may be caused by a variety of underlying lung diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), interstitial lung disease, cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, or neuromuscular disorders that affect the respiratory muscles.

CRF typically develops slowly over time, and patients may not be aware of the gradual decline in their lung function until the condition has progressed to a severe stage. Symptoms of CRF may include shortness of breath, chronic cough, wheezing, fatigue, and a bluish tint to the skin and nails due to low oxygen levels in the blood.

The diagnosis of CRF is made through pulmonary function tests, arterial blood gas analysis, and imaging studies of the chest. Treatment options for CRF may include supplemental oxygen therapy, medication to reduce inflammation or open up the airways, pulmonary rehabilitation, and in severe cases, mechanical ventilation. The goal of treatment is to improve the patient's quality of life, relieve symptoms, and prevent further deterioration of lung function.

Who should use Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM)?

Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) is recommended for people with diabetes who are looking for a more comprehensive and convenient way to monitor their glucose levels. CGM can be particularly helpful for people with type 1 diabetes, as well as some people with type 2 diabetes who require insulin therapy.

Here are some examples of who might benefit from using CGM:

1. People with type 1 diabetes: CGM can help people with type 1 diabetes manage their glucose levels and avoid dangerous hypoglycemic episodes.

2. People with type 2 diabetes on insulin therapy: CGM can help people with type 2 diabetes who require insulin therapy to better manage their glucose levels.

3. Pregnant women with diabetes: CGM can be particularly useful for pregnant women with diabetes, as it can help them maintain optimal glucose levels and reduce the risk of complications during pregnancy.

4. People with a history of severe hypoglycemic episodes: CGM can help people with a history of severe hypoglycemic episodes monitor their glucose levels more closely and avoid dangerous dips in glucose levels.

5. People with difficulty managing their glucose levels: CGM can be a useful tool for people with diabetes who have difficulty managing their glucose levels with traditional monitoring methods, such as fingerstick glucose testing.

Ultimately, the decision to use CGM should be made in consultation with a healthcare provider, who can help determine whether CGM is appropriate and how best to use it to manage diabetes.

What are the benefits of using Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM)?

Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) can offer several benefits for people with diabetes. Here are some of the key benefits:

1. Real-time glucose data: CGM provides continuous glucose readings, allowing people with diabetes to monitor their glucose levels in real-time. This can help them make adjustments to their medication, diet, and lifestyle choices to maintain optimal glucose levels.

2. Improved glucose control: CGM can help people with diabetes achieve better glucose control, reducing their risk of long-term complications such as nerve damage, kidney disease, and eye problems.

3. Fewer hypoglycemic events: CGM can alert people with diabetes to low glucose levels before they become symptomatic, helping them avoid dangerous hypoglycemic episodes.

4. Fewer hyperglycemic events: CGM can also alert people with diabetes to high glucose levels, helping them take steps to bring their glucose levels back into range and avoid hyperglycemic events.

5. Increased convenience: CGM eliminates the need for frequent fingerstick glucose testing, making diabetes management more convenient and less disruptive to daily life.

6. Improved quality of life: CGM can help people with diabetes feel more confident and in control of their diabetes management, leading to improved quality of life.

Overall, CGM can be a valuable tool for people with diabetes, helping them achieve better glucose control and reducing their risk of long-term complications.
