White pored chicken of woods. This one was a tiny little baby next to the 3.5lb chicken I foraged two days ago. It’s gotten so big so fast, I decided to dehydrate it for over winter sale. Hopefully this is a sign the drought may be ending.

Cape cod is in Drought Level 2 this summer so this big boy really wanted to show! Chicken of the Woods (Laetiporus cincinnatus) this is in my opinion the better species for eating as sometime Laetiporus sulphureus is a bit tougher. DM me if interested I am guessing this one will clock in around 3-4lbs

Finally!!! The Cape is a funny place for foraging. Our seasons start so much later than on mainland. Hopefully this is going to be the official start of the mushroom season for us here at Forage Cape Cod. The Etsy store will finally have some stock, winter and early in the pandemic cleaner us out. On to information! Golden Reishi (ganoderma curtisii) a powerful medicinal mushroom. They’re known to be analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, antioxidant and anti-allergic. Reishi mushrooms have also been shown to reduce blood pressure, blood cholesterol, blood sugar and reduce platelet aggregation that results in blood clots. Its effects on blood sugar were significant enough that it has been successfully used in the treatment of diabetes.

The antioxidant activity of compounds found in reishi mushrooms seem to target free radicals responsible for aging, and reishi helped reverse the effects of aging in lab mice. Reishi works to protect and strengthen the liver and has been successfully used for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B.

The cancer-fighting properties of reishi mushrooms are well documented in scientific literature. Reishi doesn’t seem to fight cancer cells outside the body in tissue cultures, suggesting that the main anticancer effects are achieved by strengthening a person’s immune system and helping their body fight off cancer rather than attacking cancer directly.

The most common way to prepare reishi mushrooms is as a strong tea, where thinly sliced mushrooms are simmered for extended periods (1 to 2 hours) to extract their water-soluble constituents. The medicinal components of reishi can also be extracted in an alcohol-based tincture. The dried mushroom powder can also be put into reishi capsules and taken as a daily immune boosting supplement.

Field Garlic (allium vineale) is hated by landscapers across the land but come spring it’s usually the first thing that pops up and is so tasty. Even though called field garlic it has more of a onion/garlic flavor closer to a shallot to me. Picked about 2lbs this morning and this whole batch is going into the dehydrator and then used just like dryer minced onion. Dehydrator will be getting a workout as we plan on making dried field garlic a staple product.

Purple Deadnettle (Lamium purpureum) is one of those plants that you have probably seen your entire life and just thought was a pesky w**d. This is always one of the first wild edibles to emerge in the early spring. These little guys grow everywhere. Don’t let the name fool you, this plant packs a punch! It’s abundant in vitamins, particularly vitamin C & A, along with iron and fiber, while the oil in its seeds is packed with powerful antioxidants. Used like any other leafy green and is great dehydrated. Tomorrow Ms. Forage, Taz and me are going to harvest a very large patch of these and wild garlic and make a batch of wild green pesto. Photos to follow.

Hello Everyone! First time posting since late fall. It’s almost spring here on Cape and we are all going through this pandemic. Soon as the weather really turned for the best here, the earth will come alive with plants and mushrooms we will be here to bring some beauty, knowledge, and tasty edible wild plants and mushrooms to you. So on to the pictured mushroom: it’s common name is Witches Butter (Dacrymyces palmatus) which primarily grows on coniferous trees and is a very popular mushroom in Asian cuisine, mostly in soups. It has very little flavor by itself and the jelly like consistency does not lend itself to western cuisine. (Tremella mesenterica) which is very similar species but grows on deciduous trees, is a bit more yellow in color and is also called Witches Butter. palmatus
