Escalator Over The Hill received the "Jazz Album of the Year" award from Melody Maker magazine in 1972. Rolling Stone Magazine called the album "an international musical encounter of the first order". Marcello Carlin of Stylus Magazine praised the album as "the greatest record ever made."
