Bookseller Missy here, again!

One of my favorite things about historical fiction is the imaginings of what could have been. If I were born 200 years ago, would I have had the chops to survive my circumstances?

For women, the life options in the 19th century were limited, and the expectations placed upon them, frequently demanded. Opinions, desires and wishes took an absolute backseat to tradition and societal standards. Women, simply, weren’t afforded the right of choice.

Christina Baker Kline pens The Foursome, a fictional reimagining of a true story. Two North Carolina sisters marry conjoined twins from Siam. The Yates sisters are distant relatives of Kline. Told from sister Sarah’s point of view, this tale offers heartbreak, gossip, prejudice, tenacity, determination, courage, pain, frustration, anger, uncertainty, understanding and tragedy.

A woman’s sullied reputation in 1839 could leave an entire family to ruin. In a bold statement, the Yates sisters make the decision for a different life when society affords few options.

The book kept me interested. It was thought provoking. Frequently, I found myself wondering whether I could have navigated the same situation. If you enjoy historical fiction, there’s a great chance The Foursome will keep you engaged.

We have signed copies in store.

Bookseller Missy here on this Monday morning! Wishing you all a great start to your week. I wanted to give an update…Back in June I made a post about my desire to read more this summer. (And I not-so-secretly wished I could earn a Personal Pan 🍕 for my effort. 😉)

I’m spread pretty thin with a myriad of activities, and I tend to read more in the winter. However, it’s so important to me to stand before you, behind that Scout & Morgan counter, and help you find your next favorite book. So here I am with a humble stack of books—1,997 pages. A great start, in my humble opinion.

Looking at my stack 📚 what do you think I’m reading next?! 👀

This we are revisiting one of our favorites, The Dog Stars by Peter Heller.

Originally published in 2012 it’s the story of Hig as he navigates life after surviving a devastating flu pandemic.

We’re looking forward to watching the movie adaptation that will be out soon, but we always like reading the book first (and we know 99.9% of the time the book is better😉)

Will you be watching the movie? As always we’d love to talk about it with you!

Have you entered the wildly popular, charming and entertaining world of Emma M. Lion yet?

If you are a Jane Austen or L.M. Montgomery fan you will LOVE The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion by Beth Brower.

We’ve got Volumes 1-8 in store and rumor has it several more installments are in the works!

These books are gorgeous and would make a beautiful gift or addition to your home library🌼

Bookseller Missy here!
What’s the most delectable pastry you can imagine? Do you gobble it up? Or do you savor it?

You find yourself dreaming of it, thinking of it, wanting more of it. But not wanting to finish it. You want to savor it. Slow, tender morsels.

The Calamity Club is my French pastry. Crumbles. Layers. Depth. Sadness. Grief. Anger. Injustice. Desperation.

Grit. Tenacity. Perseverance. Ingenuity. Resourcefulness. Audacity. Sharp wit. Encouragement. Loyalty. Support. Family. Friends. Framily—the friends who become family.

I held back from reading the 600+ pages in just a day or two by stretching it into six. This historical fiction piece is set in 1933 Oxford Mississippi. Surviving becomes Birdie’s main objective when she travels from her Delta home for help. Strong women are the only ones you’ll find, as page after page they face adversity and exasperation.
The characters dig deeper than they ever thought themselves capable of.

Stockett’s humor keeps the story alive and moving. It balances the very real circumstances of surviving The Great Depression.

If time had no limit, I’d open the beautiful cover and start again.
