Beekeeping is about much more than harvesting honey. 🐝

Late summer is one of the most important times of the year to care for our colonies. One of the biggest threats to honey bees is the Varroa mite, so today we’re treating some of our hives with oxalic acid vaporization to help them head into the fall healthy and strong.

Oxalic acid is a naturally occurring organic acid and one of the tools beekeepers use to manage mites. Healthy bees make healthy hives. 🍯

Early mornings are for the bees. 🐝🌅

Before the Florida heat sets in, we’re out checking our hives and making sure every colony has what it needs. In this video, one of our young beekeepers is helping feed sugar syrup to the bees.

July and August are often a summer dearth, when natural nectar is harder for bees to find. The syrup helps the bees feed themselves and raise healthy brood until the fall nectar flow returns.

A question we get a lot is whether this syrup ends up in the honey. The answer is no. We never harvest honey while we’re feeding. The syrup is simply to help the bees through a time when food is scarce.

Healthy bees make for healthy hives, and that’s always our first priority. ❤️🐝
