Who else loves new brass day? We only use new brass in the accuracy testing of our pistols to rule out the possibility of other influences, such as OAL, flash hole uniformity, etc. If we are custom building a pistol for a customer, we will tailor the chamber to ammunition they plan to use. If they do not have a specific brand/ recipe they like, we go with one developed by Bob Marvel.

When we say we take pride in our builds and we measure everything we can, we mean it. This was BCG was part of a rifle that came our way that had serious accuracy issues. We will not name the manufacturer, but it’s quite apparent that some manufacturers put more emphasis on quantity than quality.

While it may be acceptable to some for a bolt carrier to collapse under its own weight while standing, it is not for us at Black Hills Armory. That’s what drove us to conduct a more thorough inspection of this bolt carrier group. It’s possible that the gas rings on this bolt were simply worn out, had that been the case, we would’ve replaced them. It was not. Diving deeper into this BCG, the gas ring run on the carrier, which should be .500 ± .001, this particular section, using pin gages measured .503. The carrier bolt shoulder area should measure .5315 ± .001, again, using pin gages, measured .533. Needless to say, this BCG failed our inspection and was replaced with one that passed.

Is it possible that this carrier could've function properly, yes, but it's a matter of time before it fails, with an oversized gas ring run, this assembly would be quite deficient on gas function and would likely have failures to extract in the future, especially if used with lower pressure ammunition.

Got busy knocking out builds today. First is a customer build all packaged up with our build report. Next up is some of the components for a build I've always wanted to do, a Mk12Mod0 inspired build, going to be hard to let that one go! This weekend, both with be getting tested on our range for functionality and accuracy.
