We were invited to Lewis and Clark Elementary’s Summer Camp on Juneteenth, where Miss Amy read a story of the historically deep symbolism and life saving messages supplanted within quilts.

The kids then designed, drew, and painted their own squares on watercolor paper, to be included in a larger “quilt” display at a later date, an idea from Director Kim.

When asked if they could send a message to the world, what it would be, the kids offered:

“Never give up, and follow your dreams.”

“The world still loves you the way you are.”

“Everyone’s unique.”

We were invited to Wednesday’s “Creekside Kids” event this week, where we had a creation station for kids of all ages.

It was fun to get to see friends, siblings, parents and grandparents all painting together.

Our theme was water colored paper quilt squares; we plan to combine meaningful, historically symbolic squares (and unique designs made by individuals)donated to create a collage for display down the road.

The splash pad was going, an inflatable water slide was set up, there was a live djembe drum session onstage, and there were lots of smiles all around.

Wishing everyone a meaningful Juneteenth as we honor the past and continue building a future where all people feel welcomed, valued, and heard! We believe the arts are at their best when everyone has the chance to share their stories, traditions, and talents.

Paint happens.

A little paint on the fingers and a little creativity on the rock! At Music in the Creek at Indian Creek Plaza, kids can create and take home their own artwork at no cost.
