I heard a podcast the other day where the host posed an interesting question to the interviewee. With a great concern in his voice, the interviewer asked, “Do you think it’s actually possible to be content?”
It’s a heavy question when you stop to think about it, because everything in our world tells us that we need more to truly be happy. We need the next upgrade, the next model, and a cycle is thus created of a constant discarding of the old to gain the new, more satisfying option. On and on it goes until, without realizing it, we are led to always want what is just beyond our reach.
The interviewee paused, and with a deep exhale responded with this: “The question we really need to ask is, ‘What are you willing to sacrifice?’ Contentment requires you to give things up.”
I remember grabbing my phone to write this down as soon as I heard it, the profoundness of what he said resonating deep in my heart. Contentment—happiness, satisfaction, joy—does not come with gaining more. It is found when we give ourselves away.
The question for us today is not what else do you want. We need to start each day asking what can we give away.
How can we reorient the cycle of our lives to look more and more like Jesus?
Can we get up day after day and give away our time?
Our energy?
Our money?
Our love?
For us, the richness of our lives does not come with the things we acquire. Our lasting contentment—happiness, satisfaction, and joy—comes in how we give.
Encouragement today from my husband
