☀️ Don't let the Texas heat keep you at home!

I hear it all the time: "We'll visit when it cools off." But honestly? Some of my favorite Burton memories happen during the dog days of summer.

The trick isn't avoiding the heat—it's knowing how to enjoy it. Think morning coffee on the porch, browsing local shops before lunch, a relaxing afternoon by the pool, and ending the day with good food, cold drinks, and conversations that last until the stars come out.

I put together 5 simple ways to beat the Texas heat while enjoying a weekend in Burton, plus why staying overnight makes all the difference.
If you're looking for a little small-town escape, this one's for you. ❤️

🏡 Book a stay with Flown the Coop Stays, and I'll happily help you personalize your weekend with my favorite local spots and hidden gems.

If you've lived in Texas for any length of time, you've probably heard someone say, "It's not the heat, it's the humidity." Well...it's definitely both. This is the season when your glasses fog up the minute you step outside, your iced tea sweats faster than you do, and a trip to the mailbox feels li...

A great weekend to be in Burton as we roll into Cotton Gin Classic... what is your favorite classic car? I've always wanted a Red Mustang.

This Saturday is the Cotton Gin Classic at Texas Cotton Gin Museum. This yearly event is put on by Burton Sons of The American Legion. For more info: Burton Car and Truck Show

We'd love to see classic cars fill the streets of Burton all weekend! If you are planning to attend, why not make it a whole weekend? Stay at one of Burton's Lodging partners and hang out at Burton Short Stop or Orvie’s Hall. For more on where to stay & what to see in Burton, check out our website! www.destinationburton.org

Today on the blog: From Chicken Chores to Roller Skates: Our Grandkid's week in Burton.

When our grand kiddos spent a week with us in April, I was pleasantly surprised by how many memories we could make right here in our little rural community.

And frankly, I feel like we're only scratching the surface.

If you're thinking about planning a family getaway to rural Washington County, let me assure you—the kids won't be bored. From festivals and ice cream to parks, roller skating, farm animals, and simple country adventures, there's plenty of memory-making waiting to happen.

And when you're ready to slow down and enjoy it all, Flown the Coop Stays offers the perfect home base. Bring the kids, the grandkids, or the whole family and experience the kind of simple rural fun that creates stories they'll still be talking about long after they get home.

I've been an empty nester for about 16 years (don't quote me on that—it could be more or less). Activities for kiddos aren't exactly my specialty these days... until my grandkids come to visit. When they spent a week with us in April, I was pleasantly surprised by how many memories we could make ri...

June is for joy!

I follow a lady on TikTok, who shared this morning that June is for Joy. She went on to say that the month will also be wild with wonder.

Being wild with wonder is what will float through my thoughts today as I float in the pool.

What is floating around your thoughts today… the 2nd day in the month of Joy?

When I moved to Burton 11 years ago, my city friends warned me I’d be bored.

Instead, I’ve found live music, winery nights, long walks, community, and a slower pace that somehow feels fuller.

Oh—and it’s canning season. 🥒 did you catch my video on how easy it is?

Maybe small-town life isn’t about having less to do. Maybe it’s about making room for what matters.

"You'll be bored."

That's what my friends asked when I moved from Houston to Burton 11 years ago.

Today, I'm sharing a new blog about why rural life is anything but boring—and why more people are discovering the beauty of small-town travel.

Read the blog, explore Burton, and embrace a slower summer pace. Sometimes the best adventures are found in the smallest places.

When I first told my friends in Houston Heights that I was moving to Burton, Texas, the response was almost immediate:"You'll be bored."At the time, I understood the question. Burton is a town of just a few hundred people. There are no traffic jams, no endless rows of restaurants, and no packed even...
