“I never bonded with my first daughter when we breastfed and the truth of that killed me.
My first daughter was a crier and did not sleep for more than two hours for her first year of life. It was stressful to say the least. The lack of sleep, lack of breastfeeding knowledge, and the constant crying led me to not feel a bond, my supply dropping and my journey being cut short.
Starting my journey again, I was scared. Thinking it would be like the first, I was shocked when it wasn’t. And although I was feeling amazing witnessing our bond grow, it was met with an equal amount of guilt. Why didn’t I feel this with my first? What did I do wrong? Does this mean I love her less? Absolutely not.
I bond with both of my babies in two completely different ways. Where I do and don’t bond with one, the opposite happens with the other. I had to give myself grace. To allow myself to enjoy my different bonds I had with my girls and not feel guilty if that bond was not shared with both. They are two different people, how could I love them the same? Equally? Absolutely. Identical? Absolutely not. And that’s perfectly fine.
Love your babies for who the are. Don’t compare or try to parent them the same. Enjoy them for their unique personalities and build your bond from there.
