Hobby Turns to Business - Our Story

I’ve always had a passion for my lawn and in early 2002 I was introduced to my very first Reel Mower, a 1992 LOCKE. My neighbor had the finest Bermuda lawn and mowed his 1/2 acre every 3 days. No matter how hard I tried, I could never get my lawn to look as pristine as his, but damn did I try.

In 2011 we moved into a new house and 1 of the “musts” of our new house was to install Empire Zoysia (a fat blade, shade tolerant, drought tolerant turf). I was so excited and purchased my first Reel Mower, a 1972 (guessing) used 20" McLane off Craigslist.

I loved the cut, but was frustrated because my lawn looked best 5 days after cutting it because immediately after cutting, I had several areas in my lawn where the McLane would scalp my lawn. A year later one of my neighbors suggested I purchase a Front Roller to replace the front wheels on my McLane to avoid the scalping. So, I then purchased a Front Roller from the original inventor and patent holder at Reel Works, who happened to live in the next town.

After several months of mowing, I was so impressed by the front roller, that I offered to help Reel Works expand their business (on the side of my real job). They were unfamilar with selling online and I felt everyone needed to know what a HUGE difference a front roller woudl make on the performance of their mower and look of their lawn. After a couple years workign with them as a hobby, we went from selling 60 rollers a year to over 1,500 per year! The roller was a huge success!
