I’ve always had a passion for my lawn and in early 2002 I was introduced to my very first Reel Mower, a 1992 LOCKE. My neighbor had the finest Bermuda lawn and mowed his 1/2 acre every 3 days. No matter how hard I tried, I could never get my lawn to look as pristine as his, but damn did I try.
In 2011 we moved into a new house and 1 of the “musts” of our new house was to install Empire Zoysia (a fat blade, shade tolerant, drought tolerant turf). I was so excited and purchased my first Reel Mower, a 1972 (guessing) used 20" McLane off Craigslist.
I loved the cut, but was frustrated because my lawn looked best 5 days after cutting it because immediately after cutting, I had several areas in my lawn where the McLane would scalp my lawn. A year later one of my neighbors suggested I purchase a Front Roller to replace the front wheels on my McLane to avoid the scalping. So, I then purchased a Front Roller from the original inventor and patent holder at Reel Works, who happened to live in the next town.
After several months of mowing, I was so impressed by the front roller, that I offered to help Reel Works expand their business (on the side of my real job). They were unfamilar with selling online and I felt everyone needed to know what a HUGE difference a front roller woudl make on the performance of their mower and look of their lawn. After a couple years workign with them as a hobby, we went from selling 60 rollers a year to over 1,500 per year! The roller was a huge success!
About this same time, I decided it was time to really invest in my mower so I purchased the biggest, most expensive residential reel mower on the market, a Tru Cut 27” Reel Mower with the Honda engine and of course, a front roller. I fell in love with my Tru-Cut because of it's ability to climb hills and speed control. Although, the machine is a tank to maneuver and my thumb goes numb early in the season from pushing the self propulsion lever, I still felt like I had the best residential reel mower set up.
After 5 years of selling front rollers online and talking to enthusiast across the country I decided to purchase the roller business in 2016 because the product was incredible and the only limitation to further growth, was investing in awareness beyond just word of mouth. My wife and I started Reel Rollers as a side business to help fill the income gaps that sometimes come in my primary job as a Medical Sales professional. I also had a vision that Tru-Cut, Trimmer, and McLane would realize the benefits of a roller and ditch the caster front wheels (even if they weren't getting them from me). Quickly I realized these companies had no interest in advancing their reel mowers so our company started to engineer accessories to improve these mowers the same way the front roller business started, but 12 months ago put those products on hold when I was introduced to the Swardman Reel Mower in the fall of 2017.
The Sales Manager for Swardman visited with me for 2 weeks with the goal of Reel Rollers helping bring their mowers into the United States. I was reluctant because I still thought I was “cheating” on the US if I supported a foreign product. Truth is, I was being cheated because the advancements of Reel Mowers outside of the US were light years ahead of us.
The Swardman Edwin 2.0 literally has made every improvement I dreamed Tru-Cut, Trimmer, and McLane would have made years ago.
-Front Roller (smooth and grooved option)
-Enclosed Grass Catcher (most of the leaves and clippings fly over the top so I have to MOW and BLOW every time)
-CARTRIDGES (can't say enough about these)
-Rear Roller Drive that didn't have a "wheel drop down" to engage like McLane and Trimmer
-Ability to own a reel mower anywhere in the country and not be limited based on whether there is a local lawn mower shop who can service your mower. Now customers just pop out their reel cartridge and mail them to us for less than taking it to a local shop.
In September I spent an entire week with Michal the sales rep from Swardman and he left me (2) demo units to use. I told him from the start - i am hesitant to buy or sell NON American and would only sell his mower in the US if it exceeded everything else on the market.
Wow were my expectations blown away. It was similar to the feeling I got when I finally made the switch from a Blackberry to an Iphone. I didn’t know what I was missing!
In March the following year we started selling, servicing, and supporting the Swardman line of Reel Mowers. In our first year we had tremendous success and learned a ton. Starting in 2019, Reel Rollers became the exclusive dealer/ distributor for all Swardman mowers, parts, and accessories. It’s amazing how a GREAT product can change an entire market and look forward to working with more “Turf Heads” in the coming years.
Now, Reel Rollers has become a 1 stop shop for customers seeking to “Retire Their Rotary” and begin to enjoy the benefits only a Reel Mower can provide. If you are the owner of a McLane, Trimmer, or Tru Cut Mower - we still sell thousands of front rollers built from heavy duty steel customized for each mower size and brand. If you own a reel mower in general, we now offer backlap kits for every model. Lastly, if you are a true lawn enthusiast looking for 1 machine to do many of the needed jobs to keep an amazing turf, we are the exclusive dealer for the Swardman Edwin (Gas) and Swardman Electra (Battery) Reel Mowers.
