Hi bubs. Happy birthday! Don’t tell your brothers and sisters but your birthday is my most memorable. I had the distinct honor of bringing you into loving arms and handing you off to complete peace. Your arrival was a place not quite of earth and not yet of heaven. We all got a taste that day thanks to you.

You, my boy, changed me. Since you’ve left the world has been a harder and sadder place. Everyday it seems we’re all more lacking of empathy. New generations are being marked by grief and trauma, carrying around pain and anxiety that has left them hopeless. That’s where you come in. For 8 months I carried you and felt different in the world. My life was marked by an unseen struggle. Now I know it’s okay to be gentler in the world, because there are many hidden struggles under the surface of angry people. You taught me empathy.

Your dad and I also get to know what it feels like to live in the midst of deep pain but even deeper hope. That in our fear we could be brave and come out the other side more resilient. I’ve even been able to share some of that bravery with other mommas of little babies like you. I’m grateful to face my days with the truths your life taught me.

We miss you. I often ache for a little more time to look upon you and know your little body. I feel angry towards the brokenness of the world but it’s given me more freedom to boldly speak out against it in other places. You’ve made me better.
