The stars aligned this week!

When I was working on today’s wedding recipe back in January, I knew there was a chance I’d be able to find some locally grown delphinium during the last week of May. If not, I planned to order some from my wholesaler, who carries several varieties from a reliable farm I trust.

Luckily for me (and my couple), I was able to source beefy, big-bloomed stems of Delphinium elatum ‘Magic Fountains Sky Blue White Bee’ from and delicate, wispy Delphinium × belladonna ‘Cliveden Beauty’ from , both available through . The vibrant sky-blue hues of both varieties were mesmerizing.

My first choice is always locally grown, and while it doesn’t always work out (thanks to weather, supply, and demand), when it does, it feels really, really special, and it makes me very happy.

I was in tears this morning when I delivered flowers to a church for a memorial service. As I was about to leave, the pastor shared a deeply personal and heartbreaking story of loss, and I was overcome by sadness.

My next delivery was for another service honoring the life of a beloved woman. As her family members practiced their eulogies at the podium of the empty church, I quietly adjusted the flowers and topped off the vases with water. I was an unseen witness to the story of a woman I had never known.

Driving away, glassy-eyed, I found myself thinking about her life, my own, and the people in it who mean so much to me.
