A FULL HOUSE!!! Búho would like to thank Friendship of Women FOW for organizing a successful Pride Loteria here at the bookstore! This was a fun free-to-play event with LGBT themed cards & boards in the spirit of Pride Month. The winners were each entitled to an exciting assortment of prizes over a dozen rounds.

Congratulations to the lucky winners, and we certainly want to thank the attendees and Friendship of Women for coordinating such a successful gathering 😊 🦉 🏳️‍🌈

BOOKSELLERS UNITE!! Today, we were visited by Jaime Montelongo, one of the two brothers who own The Caffeine Library in Edinburg, which if I’m not mistaken, is the first independent book café of the Upper Valley!

When I asked him for advice as Búho approaches its finest hour, he said “take your time”, and approved of our projected timeline for the next few weeks as we get closer to the opening of the coffee bar 😋 ☕️

Thank you Jaime for stopping by today! It’s always great to chat with someone who walked down the road we aspire to travel on 😊 🦉 📚

Búho’s Summer Reading Giveaway is back!! Now that the school year has ended, we will be happy to give away the following awards in Búho Store Credit to THE FIRST ONE HUNDRED STUDENTS who have shown either academic excellence OR our store’s values of Curiosity, Community, and Creativity.

Students are also welcome to write an introspective 1-page paper, or give a brief 1-minute “Show & Tell” for $20 of store credit. This must be done in the student’s own words relating to any of the following prompts reflecting Búho’s 3 core values:

- Curiosity: What is a topic or hobby that you find fascinating, and why?
- Community: What do you think makes your hometown special?
- Creativity: What is something you’ve done/created that you’re proud of?

(Búho will be conducting this giveaway from now through August, or while supplies last. Student must be present to claim their award)

Happy Reading, and enjoy your Summer Break! ☀️

Búho Across America! 🇺🇸 Greetings from our Nation’s Capital, where we’re doing some field work & research for Phase 3 (our incoming coffee bar ☕️) and our highly mysterious Phase 4 (our incoming ??????? 🤫😉)

While exploring Dupont Circle here in DC, we found 3 incredible bookstores: Kramers, JF Books, and Second Story, where I just so happened to find this 1875 jaw-dropping gem of Brownsville History!

“Twenty Years Among the Mexicans” was written by Melinda Rankin, who came from New Hampshire to Brownsville and later the Mexican interior in the 1850’s for missionary & educational purposes. Her 1875 memoir shares her accounts of a building a school for Mexican girls and the Rio Grande Female Institute. Very ambitious and forward-thinking during the 1850’s, despite the cultural context of both sides of the borderlands being quite complex at this time.

Expect great inspiration for Búho from this trip, and perhaps the revelation of Búho’s Phase 4 by summer’s end 😉
