🍷 MUSCADINE VARIETY HIGHLIGHT: NOBLE

For wine enthusiasts, home winemakers, and commercial wineries, Noble remains the standard for producing quality red muscadine wine.

Noble produces large clusters of black fruit with a strong, distinctive muscadine flavor that carries beautifully into wine. Its very high yields, dependable performance, and excellent disease resistance make it a trusted choice for both backyard vineyards and commercial plantings.

Why winemakers and growers choose Noble:

• Strong, traditional muscadine flavor
• The standard variety for red muscadine wine & jelly
• Black, self-fertile variety
• Very high and dependable yields
• Large clusters of medium-sized fruit
• Vigorous, cold hardy, and disease resistant
• Ripens midseason
• 16% sugar

Whether you want to make a few bottles at home or establish a commercial wine vineyard, Noble is a proven variety worth planting.

The PAM Muscadine - Variety Spotlight:

The Pam muscadine vine is a female variety that produces beautiful bronze fruit that contains 21% sugar. The Pam muscadine is the heaviest producing muscadine and produces the largest clusters of all female varieties. It is not uncommon for clusters to have 12 to 15 grapes. The Pam muscadine can be harvested in clusters.

This muscadine fruit is dry scar with excellent quality. Dry scar is when you pull the fruit from the muscadine vine, stem, and the skin stays intact and does not tear. The skin is edible and very delicious on the Pam muscadine fruit. This variety is very disease resistant. Pam ripens early to mid-season.

A must for commercial muscadine vineyards. Developed at Ison’s Nursery. This variety was named after Bill Ison’s second daughter.
NOTE: This is a female variety that must be planted within 50 feet of a self-fertile variety in order to produce fruit.

Muscadine Variety Spotlight: SUGARGATE

Sugargate is an early ripening black female that we released here at our nursery. Before Sugargate the only large black fruited muscadine was the Jumbo. Jumbo is a very large fruit but it ripened late in the season and in my opinion had to be almost dead ripe before it was sweet.

Sugargate’s release was important for 2 reasons, first at the time it was the earliest ripening black variety available and secondly it is extremely sweet.

I have eaten my share of muscadines and the sweet flavor of Sugargate is the sweetest of all muscadines. If there are any draw backs on Sugargate is that once every 3 years it tends to put on a lighter crop than normal and if you were in a gulf coast area with sandy soil its yields were low.

I am often asked which is my favorite muscadine, and my answer is that if I knew I was about to leave this world and could only eat one before I left it would be Sugargate.

Greg Ison.

This is our family’s favorite time of year. Each late summer, we patiently walk through the vineyard, checking the vines and hoping to find the first ripe muscadine of the season. We are as excited as children on Christmas morning to rediscover that familiar flavor we have been longing for.

As much as the world changes, muscadines have a special way of taking us back in time. They remind us of childhood, making jelly with family, and loved ones who once tended their own vines. It is difficult to put into words just how deeply muscadines are woven into our Southern way of life.

For many growers, harvest began about a week earlier than usual this year. With the continued high temperatures, the season may also be shorter than normal.

Last week, I attended the UGA Muscadine Field Day in Tifton, Georgia.

The excitement surrounding the future of muscadines was remarkable, with more than 100 growers attending from as far away as Arkansas and Texas.

It was a wonderful time of fellowship and an opportunity to sample promising muscadine varieties from Dr. Patrick Conner’s breeding program.

While interest in muscadines continues to grow, there are fewer small-acreage vineyards and fewer places where families can pick their own fruit. This creates an opportunity for those interested in starting a small commercial or pick-your-own vineyard.

A one-acre vineyard can hold approximately 200 vines. At an average yield of 50 pounds per mature vine, that acre could produce around 10,000 pounds of fruit. Even at a conservative selling price of $1.50 to $2.00 per pound, a productive vineyard could generate approximately $15,000 to $20,000 in gross sales per acre while providing a valuable local source of fresh muscadines.

We hope this muscadine season brings you a bountiful harvest and many new memories with those closest to you.

Whether you are planting your first vines, adding to your home garden, or establishing a commercial vineyard, we sincerely thank you for your business and for recommending Ison’s Nursery & Vineyard to your family and friends.
