Juneteenth is an existential reminder that regardless how dire your circumstance in the here and now, there is simultaneously in the cosmos some version of you that has already been freed, some inalienable right to cast off your chains and insist on your sovereignty. That’s black liberation. That’s pride. That’s resistance. That’s the legacy of Juneteenth.

This is our bookstore. There are many like it, but this one is ours. This bookstore, without you, is useless. We at this bookstore know that what counts in this war is not the titles we carry, the events we host, or the smoke we make. We know that it is the human connections that count.

Before God, we swear this creed. Our bookstore is a defender of freedom. We are the masters of our fate. We are the dreamers of dreams.

Ham El-Waylly & Eric Kim?!

We are so excited for our upcoming event with Hisham "Ham" El-Waylly in celebration of his new cookbook, "Hello, Home Cooking"! Ham will be joined by the brilliant Eric Kim (author of cookbook "Korean American: Food That Tastes Like Home"). He'll also be doing a live cooking demo! AND there will be treats catered from his beloved restaurant Strange Delight! At the bar, our favorite mixologist Rowena will have some delightful, original cocktails and mocktails for your drinking delight. All for the low low price of $15. RSVP Below. Pre-order copies of "Hello, Home Cooking" and "Korean American" in advance of the event and have your copies signed!

Tuesday, June 9, 7 pm! (https://www.urbanebrooklyn.com/event-details-registration/hello-home-cooking-with-ham-el-waylly)

Located in the Fort Green section of Brooklyn, this modern, New Orleans-styled seafood spot, from industry veterans Hisham “Ham” El-Waylly, Anoop Pillarisetti, and Michael Tuiach, fills the gap for Creole flavors in NYC. Sure, it slings staples like chargrilled oysters, blackened catfish, and hush puppies. But it also offers twists like fried shrimp loaf on Japanese milk bread, Iberico spareribs with khao khua (Thai toasted rice powder) and shrimp loaf with Italian giardiniera...

“If I have to start somewhere, if I have to drop into the sancocho of memory and piece it together. If there needs to be a story about this child of mine, this lonely queen putting his daughter’s life in danger, well, let us start with mirrors. And if we start with mirrors, with reflection, we start with the muñeco’s eyes… Let us start the moment Ignacio moved to Bogotá with his family and left the rancho to be buried with all his secrets under the tolimense sun.”
