Noa Fort’s Plant People…

A long time Ditmas Park resident, Fort is a vocalist, pianist, composer, improviser and music therapist, working in the Jazz and Creative music scene in New York and Internationally. She released critically acclaimed albums as a composer/bandleader, and is a regular collaborator with some of NY’s greatest improvisers. Fort is also a licensed creative arts therapist and board certified music therapist. Plant People is her chamber-jazz quintet of stellar improvisers; together they treat her compositions as starting points to collective improvisations and vice versa.

Featuring: Sara Schoenbeck (bassoon), Mike McGinnis (bass clarinet), Anders Nilsson (guitar), Satoshi Takeihi (drums) and Fort on voice and compositions

Dan Loomis’s Songs for the Mother Tree…

What can trees tell us about community, love, intelligence and resilience? The scientific community is undergoing an explosion of discoveries of the powerful connectedness, consciousness and aptitude among trees. Our arboreal neighbors are capable of so much more than we have imagined — and take action in ways completely unlike our own - and often difficult for us to perceive.

Just as trees communicate with each other in a different way……. maybe we should be talking about them in a different way. This project is an attempt to channel the recent human inspiration from trees into a sonic world - to speak through music and art rather than only through science.

Featuring: Jeff Miles (guitar), Elsa Nilsson (flutes), Mike McGinnis (clarients), Noa Fort (voice), Dam Loomis (bass and compositions)

🎉 Open Call 2026!! 🎉
We’re putting the call out to folks interested in creating an event in our Backspace in 2026! We are (still, daily!) thrilled to have moved into this expanded storefront in December 2022, which functions as a multipurpose space—shop in the front, and all kinds of ✨happenings✨ in the back.

In the past 3 years we’ve been hosting local artist markets, literary readings, weekly yoga classes, art & craft workshops, performances of all types, kids’ events, and so much more! The Backspace is best suited for intimate, community-centered gatherings, and we’re excited to see what new ideas can come to life here in the year ahead 🔮

And so, we’re inviting folks to submit ideas they’d like to bring to fruition at some point in 2026. This could include....

💡 Performance artists — dance, movement, theater, etc — interested in showcasing their work
💡 Independent filmmakers planning a screening
💡 Folks interested in leading workshops or classes for the community
💡 Artists & makers who’d like to participate in our pop-up markets (which can also be an entry point for possibly bringing work onto the shop shelves, though not guaranteed)
💡 And so much more!

We’re especially excited about proposals that are community-rooted, process-driven, experimental, and care-forward.

**One note on live music**
If you’re interested in playing a show in our Backspace, please email us directly at [email protected] at any time during the year. We’ll be in touch if we see a good fit.

Key dates & details:
🔸 Submissions will be accepted from Feb 13th to 28th, 2026
🔸 The link to the submission form is in our bio and on our website! The form will be live for submissions starting on Feb 13th
🔸 All applicants will be notified by March 13, 2026 regarding whether their proposal is a good fit for our 2026 programming!

Please know that due to capacity and scheduling constraints, we may not be able to accept all submissions, but we are already full of excitement and gratitude for all of the ideas that will flow into this open call. We can’t wait to read them and bring as many as possible to life! ✨

As we move into February, our hearts are both full and aching. We are deeply grateful for this community and inspired by the many people across our city and country who are standing up for one another’s right to exist without fear or persecution.

We hope to see many of you here—gathering, connecting, making art, and taking time to enjoy it together 💗

Please continue to support the small businesses you value through this extremely cold and always tenuous part of the year. Thank you for being part of our community — we’ll get through it together.

Our shop will be closed for business on Friday, January 30th as we join the general strike in solidarity with Minneapolis and every community currently under assault by 🧊 and this administration. This is not a decision we can make casually as a small business who relies on each day’s sales to stay afloat, but we couldn’t feel more clear about joining this shutdown. We want 🧊 out of our communities and out of existence, and we believe in the power of the people to demand change.

We will be opening our doors in the evening to welcome the live music show we’re grateful to be hosting, so come out after-hours to share space with neighbors and be part of the community we’re here to defend. If you’re coming to the show, we encourage folks to bring cash to support the band without relying on the $ platforms.

Beaming out to y’all 💗

Aaaaand that’s a wrap ♥️🎉♾️ wow wow wow… so, so much gratitude!!! Whether you joined one of our happenings, shared ideas that we got to bring to life together in this space, performed or played music here, chose us to sell your goodies, or shopped small with us this season (and always)… for every moment we gathered here: THANK YOU.

We really believe these collective processes are a reminder of what’s possible. Hope is a daily practice. It’s how we move through a world of constant change while choosing care — for each other and for ourselves. It takes intention and action, and you’ve shown up for it with us. That means SO much.

Thank you, truly, for supporting small, for investing in community, and for helping us build hope together. 🐝🐝🍯

Here’s to more connection, more creativity, and more moving together in the year ahead. 🧡💙💛
