Before Tulip, we had never heard of the International Day of Light. Now it’s one of our favorite days of the year.
Maybe that’s what happens when you spend your life thinking about light constantly. Artists like James Turrell transformed light into atmosphere itself. Dan Flavin turned fluorescent tubes into sculpture. And in the paintings of Georgia O’Keeffe, light becomes emotional, shaping the feeling of a landscape, a room, a moment.
The International Day of Light takes place on May 16th and was established by UNESCO to celebrate the role light plays in science, culture, art, and everyday life. And the more we think about it, the more impossible it feels to separate light from the way we experience the world around us.
It shapes mood. Rhythm. Conversation. Rest. The feeling of home. For most of human history, people lived much closer to natural light. Bright mornings, candlelit evenings, darkness at night. Modern life changed that quickly, replacing softness with lighting built mostly for function.
Tulip came from thinking about that tension. Holding onto golden hour, always.
