yanston l. mcshine (editor)
information
first edition, 1970. scarce.

"in the summer of 1970, the museum of modern art in new york mounted the now legendary exhibition information, one of the first surveys of conceptual art. conceived by moma’s celebrated curator kynaston mcshine as an 'international report' on contemporary trends, the show and attendant catalogue together assembled the work of more than 150 artists from 15 countries to explore the parameters and possibilities of the emerging art practices of the era. noting the participating artists’ attunement to the 'mobility and change that pervades their time,' mcshine underscored their interest in 'ways of rapidly exchanging ideas, rather than embalming the idea in an 'object.'' indeed, much of the work in the exhibition engaged mass-communications systems, such as broadcast television and the postal service, and addressed viewers directly, often encouraging their participation in return.

the catalogue, rather than merely document the show, functioned autonomously: it included a list of recommended reading, a chance-based index by critic lucy lippard, and individual artist contributions in the form of photographic documentation, textual description, drawings, and diagrams—some relating to work in the exhibition and others to artworks as yet unrealized."

joan didion
a book of common prayer
first edition, 1977.

set in the fictional central american country "boca grande," didion's third novel is narrated by grace strasser-mendana, an american expatriate who married into one of the nation's politically dominant families. grace narrates the experiences of charlotte douglas, another american whose daughter marin has run off with marxist radicals and whose marriage to her husband is falling apart.

in a 1977 review in the new york times, fellow author joyce carole oates proclaimed that, in this novel, didion "investigates the consequences of [a social] breakdown over the past two decades, particularly on parents and children."

plush
signed first edition, limited to 500 copies, 2014.

marilyn minter's first artist book and the last book published by richard prince's secretive upper east side bookstore that closed in 2014.

"in the 19th-century, 'plush' was used as term to refer to p***c hair... the idea was to create beautiful images of p***c hair, a subject matter that seems to be disappearing from popular discourse. we asked model’s of all races, all colours to grow out their p***c hair and i got inspired to make photos and paintings from some of those images, and i’m still shooting them."

victor hugo
les miserables
1867.

illustrated with two hundred drawings by gustave brion. engravings by yon & perrichon [collaborative partnership between edmond yon (1836-1897) and georges-léon-alfred perrichon (1830-1907)].

this novel refuses simple summation. paris’s revolution, religion, love, and the architecture of suffering are all folded into this epic. as one reviewer notes, "the beginning isn’t the beginning": hugo excavates through digressions, moral theology, urban design, and revolutionary yearning. he then laughs amid the ruin.

with jean valjean’s path from thief to saint, cosette’s mistreatment, javert’s relentless justice, barricades erected in the streets, each chapter becomes a potent mix of mischief and mass grief.

Sylvère LotringerSemiotext(e) is reissuing in book form its legendary magazine issue Italy: Autonomia: Post-Political Politics, originally published in New York in 1980. Edited by Sylvère Lotringer and Christian Marazzi with the direct participation of the main leaders and theorists of the Autonomist movement, this volume is the only first-hand document and contemporaneous analysis that exists of the most innovative post-'68 radical movement in the West. The movement itself was broken when Autonomia members were falsely accused of (and prosecuted for) being the intellectual masterminds of the Red Brigades; but even after the end of Autonomia, this book remains a crucial testimony of the way this creative, futuristic, neo-anarchistic, postideological, and nonrepresentative political movement of young workers and intellectuals anticipated issues that are now confronting us in the wake of Empire.
