march! kalo mina! women’s history month. spring. greek independence day. lent. a time to emerge from hibernation! ✨

Today, on March 1st and the Sunday of Orthodoxy, it is especially fitting to remember Empress Theodora. (slide 4) Leaving a rural family to marry an iconoclast Emperor, she used her power to restore iconography to the Church after his death.

ready to sparkle in the spring sun! 🌞

martaki featuring a terracotta triangle baked on a Greek island and covered in 24K gold for a tiny indulgence ✨

on march 1st, according to a very old tradition deeply connected to the cycles of the natural world, we tie little red and white bracelets on our wrists. this symbolizes the spring, when the sun grows stronger, and nature reawakens. martakia mean hope.

many people make wishes, tying their bracelets onto a tree for good luck after some time has passed, making a tiny offering to nature (some traditions say a bird will come to pick up the string for their nests!) and hoping that their wish will come true. in some parts of greece, the tradition is so specific that the timing is not connected with the changing months, but with the return of a local migratory bird or with the blooming of a local flower.

the greek earth collection honors this deep connection to the earth, with terracotta beads sourced from greece and cotton string. (terracotta means “cooked earth!”)

art is what you see - do you see hearts? 💕

Ancient “hearts” before this [ ❤️ ] was a universal symbol! Vase painters in antiquity loved to fill every space with design. If you’ve ever been young and rejoiced in filling in your school notes with hearts and flowers and doodles, you understand this joy. These hearts are actually leaves! 🥰

martakia to me have always been a symbol of hope, as much as a symbol of spring. as busy as I have been creating and telling stories, I couldn’t forgo a collection this year, when it feels like we need hope more than ever.

With beads baked in Greece of terracotta and finished with nature-toned glazes or 24K gold, you can touch Greek earth wherever you are.

martakia: the greek earth collection ✨

now live!

ps: the need for hope across the world always exists; it just seems more tangible now, more personal to the specific ways I’m connected to the world.
