OUR LAST TUESDAY TASTING IS A DOOZY! Any list of Sorriso’s most memorable tastings would include winemaker visits when we tasted through a vertical of their wines—Cascina val de Prete, Col d’Orcia, Chateau Musar….What better way for us to go out? We won’t have the winemaker, but we do have a spectacular vertical of Sangiovese from Montalcino’s Canalicchio di Sopra to help send us out in style.

Founded in 1962 by Primo Pacenti, the family produced their first Brunello in1966. The following year, Canalicchio di Sopra was one of the twelve founders of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino.

We will be tasting their 2022 Rosso di Montalcino followed by two Brunellos from 2019: their standard bottling plus the single vineyard selection from La Casaccia. We then proceed to Brunellos from 2006 and 1995.

No, we are not messing around, and we can’t wait to share these with you starting at 5:00!

It’s been a tough week, but tonight was a reminder of just a few things that can raise your spirits: great friends who share a love of wine, winemakers who’s passion and commitment is evident in every sip, and Grassl because their glasses have the power to elevate the wine and your mood.

Did you know that yesterday was International Pinot Noir Day? Honestly, we didn’t either—but once we found out, there was only thing to do: offer an international line-up of Pinot for our Tuesday tasting. We will have examples from around the globe to sample, compare, and—of course—enjoy. It may be a day late, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be fun. See you starting at 5:00!

Free Tasting: Brookline Village, Tonight 5-8

This week, Kevin and Mike have mixed up a medley of Mediterranean marvels, some old and some new.

First up, a new Pigato from Liguria. Pigato is closely related to Vermentino, the quintessential pan-Mediterranean grape. Brisk and salty, offering notes of citrus peel, white flowers, and subtle fresh herbs. Perfect with everything from pesto to grilled octopus.

Next, from Greece, a new wine featuring the hitherto unknown-to-us grape Kydonitsa. It’s from the Monemvasia winery, whose bottlings already feature heavily in our Hellenic holdings. Aromas of tropical fruits, bergamot, and quince. Full-bodied from aging on its lees, yet fresh and long. Pair with spanakopita, grilled fish, or chicken with lemon and herbs.

We stay in Greece for another indigenous grape, Limniona. This red hails from the foothills of Mount Olympus. On the nose, raspberry and pomegranate, with a hint of peppery spice. On the palate, fruity, fresh, lively, and medium-bodied, with smooth tannins. Perfect pairing with veggie or lamb kebabs.

Our next red is an old favorite from Provence. Certified organic, it’s a bold blend of 60% Grenache, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Mourvedre, and 10% Cinsault. Aromas of black fruits and telltale Herbes de Provençe. Flavors of spiced black cherries and plums, with notes of rosemary and lavender. Magic with grilled red meats, from hamburger to steak.

Finally, to Israel for a delicious, light, sweet, fizzy, and aromatic Moscato. Great with dessert or as dessert by itself.

The Mediterranean diet is a thing of beauty and so are the wines that grew up hand in hand with it! See you tonight!

Free Winemaker Tasting
Thursday, July 31, 6-8 PM, Brookline Village

Meet seasoned winemaker Byron Kosuge, who will be visiting the shop to present his wines from Carneros and the Sonoma Coast.

Born and raised in the Central Valley town of Davis, California, for the first 15 years of his winemaking career he was at Saintsbury in Carneros, where his obsession with the Pinot Noir grape began. Leaving Saintsbury in 2001, he continued to craft Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in California and Chile. In 2004, he started his own brand, while continuing to make wine and consult at other wineries.

Too humble and thoughtful to be a “rock star” winemaker, Kosuge spends his time and energy deeply engaged with the vines he works and the wines he makes. “Over the years,” he says, “I’ve found my way towards what I hope is a ‘new tradition’ of winemaking, largely inspired by old world methods but recombining them in ways that seem to suit New World conditions. Anyone with more than a passing interest in wine knows that New World and Old World wines arise in pretty different conditions and yet we mostly insist that what works in Burgundy, for example, should work in California. I question that. Why not be brave and chart our own course?”

Come taste some wonderful wines with the man who made them. We’ll have his Sonoma Coast Chardonnay, Carneros Rosé of Pinot Noir, Carneros Gamay Noir, Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, and his amazing 2009 Hudson Vineyard Carneros Syrah. Plus a surprise or two! And, as always, we offer 10% off of three or more bottles from the tasting. Do not miss this one!

Free tasting: Brookline Village, Tonight 5-8 PM

Please join us this this evening, when Gemma, of Giannoni Selections, returns to our tasting table to pour peerless potables from her portfolio of Italian gems!

We’ll start with an orange pet-nat made from Vermentino by Eugenio Bo****no and Cinzia Pelazza, of “Weiner Dog” Barbera fame. Though they hail from Piedmont, this is from their Sardinian vineyards. Fun, fizzy, fresh and lively! Next, it’s off to the mainland for Vermentino’s Piedmontese cousin Favorita. Fermented and elevated in stainless steel, it’s crisp and clean, bursting with notes of peach, citrus rind, and white flowers.

We’ll cross the border into Slovenia for our next selection, Rado Kocijančič’s Rebula (AKA Ribolla Gialla), among our top-selling orange wines. Given three weeks of maceration, it’s textured yet not too tannic. A fine food wine that can bridge the gap between red and white wine.

Our first red, Crivelli’s Grignolino, returns us to Piedmont. In Crivelli’s hands, this lesser-known grape produces a quintessential quaffable red, showing notes of rosehips, white pepper, and red fruit. A perfect accompaniment for picnic fare. Finally, we travel to Tuscany for a Chianti Classico from one of our favorite producers, Casina di Cornia. It’s 100% Sangiovese, with a dusty cherry nose and an elegant palate that shows bright cherry fruit and nuances of anise and herbs.

Gemma’s tastings are always a blast, so don’t miss this one. See you tonight!

Free tasting: Brookline Village, Tonight 5-8 PM

For this this evening’s tasting we welcome a new supplier to the table: Wine-Cask Imports. We’ve been shy on sake in our Brookline Village shop for some time, so when presented with a selection from Wine-Cask, we decided to grab four different bottlings.
For good measure, we’ll also be pouring a new American gin from them.

Sake is a fascinating, food-friendly drink brewed from rice, koji (a mold that promotes fermentation), and water. Different strains of rice, koji, and local water sources add up to very different regional variations, akin to those of wine. Sake’s flavors and textures can range from fruity to savory, from soft and sweet to crisp and dry. This is a great opportunity to taste and learn about this storied beverage!

The Harmony Gin is from Holistic Spirits Co., founded by entrepreneur Amy Holmwood and actor Woody Harrelson. A striking rose gold in color, its botanicals include artichoke leaf, elderberry, Muscadine grape, and green tea leaf extract along with the requisite juniper. Deliciously different!

See you tonight!

Free Tasting: Brookline Village, Tonight 5-8

Kevin and Mike are manning the tasting table tonight with some handpicked new arrivals along with a couple of gems that have so far gone unfeatured. Of course, there’s a distinctly Italian bias – even the one from the United States is made from an Italian grape!

We’ll start with a newly arrived white, from the rare Piedmontese grape Nascetta. It comes to us from Arnaldo Rivera, the cooperative that makes our top-selling, accessible, and affordable “Undicicommuni” Barolo. Delightful! Our next white is from Montefalco in Umbria, a blend highlighting Trebbiano Spoletino. Medium-bodied, a bit nutty, a bit peachy, with nuances of honey, herbs, and citrus peel. Delicious! Then, from Washington State, we have a rosé of Nebbiolo. This was Kevin’s favorite rosé last summer, and the new vintage is just as lithe and lively. De-Lovely!

Our first red continues the Nebbiolo theme and returns us to Piedmont, coming to us from one of our favorite under-the-radar wineries of the region, Aurelio Settimo. Then it’s back to Umbria for a Montefalco Rosso, a complex, zesty blend of 60% Sangiovese, 25% Merlot, and 15% of Montefaco’s signature grape Sagrantino. The winery’s cool name, Scacciadiavoli, translates as “chase away the Devil”!

See you this evening and let’s shoo off those demons together!

Free tasting: Brookline Village, Tonight 5-8 PM

Please join us as our good friend Ross, of Classic Wine Imports, returns to our tasting table for a sampling of wonderful wines — three Spanish, two Italian.

We’ll start with a crisp, lightly effervescent Txakoli from Spain’s Basque country. Great with seafood! Then a lovely white Rioja, also great with fish, but suitable for white meat dishes as well.

Our reds will start with an Etna Rosso, made from Nerello Mascalese, Sicily’s answer to Pinot Noir! Then back to Spain for another Rioja. But this one is different, made from 100% Graciano, a rare grape that’s a key component in the blend for Reserva and Grand Reserva Rioja, lending color and structure. This bad boy will be super with grilled red meat, from hamburger to ribeye.

We’ll return to Italy for our final wine, an off-dry Prosecco from one of the region’s finest producers, Adami. Great on its own or in a spritz, the drink of the Summer!

See you this evening!
