I’ve been working on writing this for a few days. It’s been difficult to find the right words to honor an amazing man, and it’s also been a struggle dealing with my own emotions. For those outside of the Milwaukee area, 2 Milwaukee police officers were ambushed responding to a call for a man with a gun on June 26th. Officer Kendall Corder was killed, and his partner, Officer Chris McCray was injured. A lot has been reported on Officer Corder since he passed, and he truly felt a calling to serve his community as a police officer. He had a passion to help, serve, and protect the citizens of Milwaukee, and he was the epitome of what it means to put a badge on every day. He fought to live for a few days after being shot, and a squad car draped in blue was put outside of his district station to serve as a memorial and gave people a place to pay their respects. Initially, my kids and I brought flowers and cards, but I wanted to put my crafting skills to use to honor and show support to his fellow officers at district 2 and all of their blood and blue families. I made 2 canvas wraps-one for Officer Corder’s family and one I’m hoping will hang in his district’s roll call room. I also made 3 memorial car decal designs for Officer Corder, and I made a street sign and t-shirt for Officer McCray. The kids and I headed back to the district on Friday to drop everything off. We had the opportunity to talk to a few officers, and after handing everything over to the sergeant, he asked me to stay put for a minute. He returned with a bracelet that was made for Officer Corder’s family and coworkers to wear in his honor. The sergeant told me it was the last one they had, and he wanted me to have it. I am beyond touched and grateful to have been given something so meaningful and sentimental. I will wear it with pride and honor in remembrance of a man who gave everything for the greater good of other people and risked his life everyday to do a dangerous job that he loved. May he rest easy. And although he is fallen, he’ll never be forgotten!! 🖤💙🖤
