❗ Firearm Purchase Denial – What You Need to Know ❗
Sometimes a customer gets denied on a 4473 (that’s the federal firearm background check form), and it can feel confusing or frustrating — but you're not alone, and there are steps you can take.
🛑 What can cause a denial?
Felony convictions or certain domestic violence misdemeanors
Active protection/restraining orders
Dishonorable discharge from the military
Mental health rulings
Drug-related offenses
Outdated or incorrect information in the system
đź“„ In Washington State:
Background checks are now handled by Washington State Patrol (WSP) — not NICS — so we don't receive any explanation for a denial. It's simply an approved or denied .
📍 If you're denied:
Stay calm. Many denials are based on outdated or incorrect records.
You can request a firearm background check challenge through WSP to get more details or dispute the denial. Please also know we are very understanding here and will not judge you for anything you have done in your past, and you do not need to share that information if you're not comfortable with it.

👉 If you've been denied at our shop, Washington State Patrol (WSP) provides us with an official sheet that outlines exactly what steps you need to take, including all the contact info and resources for your specific case.
🛑 Important: If you don’t take action to challenge the denial, you may eventually receive a call or visit from a sheriff’s deputy. Don’t panic — this is standard procedure. Law enforcement is required to investigate firearm denials, and they often start by checking in with us first.
💬 In many cases, I’m able to tell them that the situation has already been resolved and the customer came back and was approved. It can take up to a month before your case even lands on a deputy’s desk — so you have time to get it sorted.
If you need help starting the process or understanding what’s on that sheet, just reach out. We’re here to help!
💬 If you need help figuring out your next step, feel free to call or text us — we’re happy to guide you however we can.
