Amazing things are happening all the time in the one and only Brattleboro! Including this AMAZING project over at 118 Elliot. As part of America’s 250th birthday, 118 Elliot has teamed up with Uriel Najera, DBA and other community orgs, to present “I Lift My Light”. Giant puppet build with Uriel? We are IN!

118 Elliot is working with other community groups and Bread & Puppet Theater Alum Uriel Najera to lead free puppet-making workshops for adults and children at 118 Elliot to build a giant Statue of Liberty puppet and other puppetry performance elements that will be presented as part of the ‘Brattleboro Goes Fourth’ July 4th parade.

On Friday, July 3, from 2–4 pm, Uriel will also lead a Kids Workshop (5-12 years), in 118 Elliot’s back lot. Participants will get to make wearable wings from different birds that migrate across the world. Later that day, during Brattleboro’s July First Friday & Gallery Walk event, the public is invited to join Uriel and other volunteers to help complete the Statue of Liberty puppet in the lot behind 118 Elliot from 5pm to 7pm. The completed Lady Liberty puppet may also ‘march’ to the Harmony Parking Lot to make her public debut.

On Saturday, July 4, The Statue and supporting puppets made the previous evening will participate in the Brattleboro Goes Fourth parade which will take place at 10am. The parade steps off from the corner of Flat Street, proceeds up Main Street, and concludes at the town Common.

To accommodate the event at the new Amtrak train station, the Town will temporarily close Bridge Street and Depot Street on Wednesday, June 24, 2026. The closures will begin at 10:30 a.m. Both streets are expected to reopen by 2 p.m.

Volunteers will be stationed at the closures and will allow local traffic through for those traveling to or from properties located on Bridge Street or Depot Street. Please plan ahead and consider alternate travel routes during this time. We appreciate your patience and cooperation.

Lux Deluxe - Northampton’s premier yacht rock ensemble making their 3rd(?) appearance at Bratt First Fridays & Gallery Walk. Bangers! Eagles-esque harmonies! Style! 😎

Sammy and Brother’s music blends traditional African styles, specifically from DR Congo and East Africa, with message driven song writing. Siblings Israel Mbombo, Samuel Divinda (known as Sammy), Gershom Mbombo and Shekinah Pemba met Noah Stires at church, and immediately connected through music. Their interactive performances break down barriers between the band and the audience, getting people singing and dancing in shared celebration of life and song.

Kornguth’s Soapbox Derby hits First Friday on July 3rd with a live build in anticipation of the actual derby on August 9th.

In an endeavor to promote the event and imspire participatin, the organizers of the Kornguth’s Annual(ish) Soapbox Derby will be constructing a nominally functional vehicle from scrap for one (or multiple) spactator within the duration of the evening.

This year‘s race represents the ninth Kornguth’s Annual(ish) Soapbox Derby, an event which combines creativity, industriousness, and daring do in a family friendly spectacle which draws hundreds of spectators, dozens of participants and features live entertainment, food trucks, and vendors.

Each year, racers conceive and construct unique, gravity-powered vehicles, mostly out of salvaged and recycled materials, then muster the courage to hurl themselves down one of the fastest hills on the east coast! Some of the cars are Jeri rigged and wonky while others represent examples of engineering brilliance and meticulous craftsmanship.

On race day, their MC hosts the festivities which kick off with a rousing rendition of our national anthem. Soon after, the first heats begin. Between heats, while the cars are towed back up the hill, bands entertain spectators, and the celebrity judges get to work creating individual trophies for each participant.

The day concludes with the award ceremonies and a performance by the headlining act.

Public Art can be act of protest. It can make a statement, or ask a question. It can spark pride of place, or unite a community. Public Art can do many things, but whatever the purpose, Brattleboro loves it! Our Downtown center is bursting at the seams with installations, some small and others large, and often in the most surprising of places.

Ask The River (‘20) is a stunning example of collaboration and thoughtfulness weaving together a story, a people, and the natural resources that surround us. It’s located on the north side of the Brattleboro Transportation Center. And when the sun hits just right, it’s dazzling.

“Intertwining people and place, Ask the River, a community-wide art project, empowers us to reconnect with the Connecticut River and the water that flows through it.

Ask the River started as a drop of water on the side of a mountain, then became a trickle, a stream, a river. It began as part of an NEA Our Town Grant, which led to a temporary facade on a parking garage. It made a difference. Partners came in like tributaries: the Brattleboro Museum and Art Center, the Connecticut River Conservancy, the Downtown Brattleboro Alliance, and Rich Holschuh, a member of the Vermont Commission on Native American Affairs, who helps guide the project with the Abenaki understanding that people and place are one: We are the river and the river is us.”
