In celebration of Pride Month, our June pick is Rabih Alameddine’s THE ANGEL OF HISTORY (2016). Set over the course of one night in the waiting room of a psych clinic, The Angel of History follows Yemeni-born poet Jacob as he revisits the events of his life, including his life as a gay man in San Francisco at the height of the AIDS epidemic.

Did you know a portal to magic & mystery awaits just behind the counter at Country Bookshelf? 🔮

We’re talking about our tarot cards, of course! To highlight some of these mystical beauties, we asked our booksellers to curate a stack of books that vibe with a particular deck. We’re loving what they came up with. Plus, there are some sweet gift ideas in here!

From the classic Rider-Waite to more intuitive decks like the Wild Unknown, we have one of the largest selections of tarot in Bozeman. If you’d like to take a closer look at any particular deck, don’t be shy—just ask a bookseller!

Join us on Thursday, May 28 at 7pm as we welcome Hillary Rosner, author of ROAM: WILD ANIMALS AND THE RACE TO REPAIR OUR FRACTURED WORLD. Hillary will be joined by Joseph T. O’Connor, managing editor of Mountain Journal.

ROAM is a response to a world where animals have become stranded—by roads, fences, drainage systems, industrial farms, and cities—offering solutions for how we can reshape our human-built landscapes to serve both people and wildlife.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and our booksellers have put together this thoughtful display of fiction featuring characters who grapple with depression, anxiety, grief, suicidal ideation, and other mental health struggles.

By conveying these experiences with honesty, nuance, and compassion, books have the power to strengthen our empathy, break down stigmas, and remind us that none of us truly struggles alone ❤️‍🩹

Join us this Thursday, May 14 at 5:30pm as we host a conversation with Bozeman Symphony Director Norman Huynh and Shakespeare scholar Dr. Gretchen Minton!

It is common knowledge that West Side Story is based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. But what does it mean to adapt Shakespeare, changing the genre as well as the setting, and even making a radical alteration to how it ends? Join Gretchen Minton and Norman Huynh as they explore the nature of Bernstein and Sondheim’s adaptation, highlighting the creative interplay between poetry, music, and movement.

Tickets are not required but RSVPs are appreciated! Learn more at countrybookshelf.com/events.

We’re thrilled to welcome local author Kelsey K. Sather on Tuesday, May 12 at 6pm to celebrate the launch her new fantasy novel LIVES OF A SALVAGER, book two in her “Ancient Language of the Earth” series!

Kelsey will be in conversation with local writer, facilitator, and podcast host Emily Stifler Wolfe to discuss ecological devotion, the writing process, and fantasy storytelling as a tool for cultural transformation. Together, they’ll move between the world of the book and the real-world questions it raises about power, memory, and our relationship to the natural world.

🎟️Tickets are free but RSVPs are always appreciated! Learn more at countrybookshelf.com/events

Our May book club will meet on Wednesday, May 20 at 5:30pm! We’ll be discussing Percival Everett’s THE TREES (2021), which NPR called “a highwire combination of whodunnit, horror, humor and razor blade sharp insight.”

📕Bookseller emeritus & Percival Everett superfan Frances had this to say about THE TREES:
“Percival Everett is a genius of the written word. This novel provides striking commentary on the present state and history of racial violence in the United States. Underlying this commentary is a perplexing mystery and a level of satirical humor that toes the line of discomfort. I white-knuckled this book until its conclusion. You’ll never stop thinking about it.”

We hope you can join us!
