Another Bandcamp Friday, as we've added an old favorite to the shop.

Angie Pepper's album was stuck in limbo when we launched Career Records. David Weyer had a vision, but things had stalled. Deniz Tek decided to forge ahead and record the second half of the album with Donovan's Brain. I think this was an attempt to get the project off dead center. That idea motivated Dave to finish his part of the album and get on with it.

The results show off Angie's talents very well. The logical follow up to the Passengers and Angie Pepper Group recordings.

23 years later, we want to make sure this classic doesn't get lost in the shuffle.

Sunday is Brain guitar day.

Out on the water coast, Scott Sutherland added guitar to a pair of songs of mine. One of them, Waterfall is now done and ready to mix. The other, Promises Sold Cheap needs some work on the vocals, but it is otherwise done.

Out here I spent the last two days getting Red Salt up to speed. The demos were too slow. That meant I now had to work out a guitar arrangement for what I'd written on piano. The attempt yesterday was encouraging, but the sound wasn't right. It was just a test. Today I moved on to 12-string and a smaller amp. I also pulled up a drum loop that suited the song.

I struggled with the intro section and ended up simplifying it. After that I just worked out each section at a time. I kept it very simple. The bass will have to carry it. I can hear a small second part, either on guitar or back to the piano. It was real progress and puts this song up on the active list. I think that gives us nine songs to consider for the next album.

It's still far to early to see any shape for a new record. It's just a time to write and collect ideas.

Donovan's Brain Plays Donovan's Brain, the next in an occasional series of Bandcamp exclusive EPs will be released on December 5th. This gem from the archive features a recently discovered slab of Richard Treece with Donovan's Brain. A ten minute jam was recorded in October 2000 while the band was rehearsing for the Seattle Terrastock. This session was prior to the one Bozeman warm up gig the band played. Most of the rehearsal material heard on Convolutions Of The Brain come from the final session the day after that lone local gig.

This cassette recording was simply a monitor headphone mix. Pete Weiss mastered the recording to bring up to s***f for a release. The two songs omitted from the final set list were also captured, but sadly the performances were less than satisfactory.... which is probably why they were dropped from consideration when the set was trimmed to fit the alloted time.
Richard's Dream (A Small Cabin And A Marshall Stack) is ten minutes of Richard in full flight. The band sets a solid groove for Richard to solo over. This performance was never cataloged and had not been heard for twenty-five years.

A second song from the rehearsal sessions fills out the EP for a total of sixteen minutes of live Brain. Tad's New Cymbal Stand (Alt Version) was previously available as a bonus download included with Burnt Trees In The Snow.

This is a digital release, but.... in the month of December, all four EPs will be offerd as a limited CDR. They all come with artwork, printed on heavy photo stock in a slimline jewel case.
