Happy Easter - Frohe Ostern

When Easter is celebrated in Germany, Easter eggs and Easter bunnies are essential. Especially in families with young children, brightly painted eggs and chocolate bunnies are an integral part of the holidays. But where do these traditions originate? What is the significance of the festival in Germany ? And on which days is it celebrated? Answers to the most important questions about Easter.

What is celebrated at Easter?

Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus at Easter. According to Christian belief, Jesus was crucified on Good Friday and rose again on Easter Sunday. For Christianity, Easter is the most important festival of the year – more significant than Christmas. However, Christmas is celebrated much more elaborately in Germany in December.

When is Easter celebrated?

Easter is celebrated on a different date each year. According to church tradition, the festival takes place on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox. Because spring begins on March 21st in the church calendar, Easter always falls between March 22nd and April 25th.

1. Easter custom: Dyeing Easter eggs
2. Easter custom: Giving away and searching for Easter eggs
3. Easter custom: Easter pastries
Traditional Easter treats include delicacies like Easter lamb and Easter bread. Whether bought or homemade, a sweet Easter bread in the form of a classic braided loaf or an Easter nest is an essential part of the Easter holidays for many people.

What other Easter traditions/ customs are there in Germany?

Easter bonfires are a traditional custom in many regions . Centuries ago, spring was welcomed with a fire; later, Christian Easter bonfires developed. At many bonfires, Easter candles are lit on Easter night and carried into a darkened church.

Are the shops closed over Easter?

Good Friday, Easter Sunday, and Easter Monday are public holidays in Germany. With few exceptions, shops and supermarkets are closed on these holidays. However, shops are open on Holy Saturday.

Celebrating Second Christmas

For Germans and Pennsylvania Germans (PA Dutch), the Second Day of Christmas (December 26th), or Zweiter Weihnachtstag, was historically a day for quieter family visits

A favorite German and Pennsylvania Dutch Christmas tradition is — Second Christmas!
While you may think that the Amish lead a reserved lifestyle, they certainly have their own set of fun holiday traditions and love to celebrate as well.

Just like Boxing Day in the U.K., Second Christmas is observed the day after Christmas. The Amish take this day off as well and use it to visit more families and friends that they couldn’t spend time with on Christmas day. It’s always hard to fit seeing everyone into one day, especially when you have a large family. Second Christmas gives both children and adults more time to see their loved ones and celebrate the holiday.

Unfortunately the second Christmas Day tradition in the USA has been replaced with the mad dash back to the shopping malls and stores looking for after Christmas sales and returning or exchanging presents for most Pennsylvania Germans.

While most fancy PA Dutch folks and most Americans may not get to observe Second Christmas, there certainly is nothing like spending the holidays together with friends and family. 🎄
