I was so moved by a young man that came to our estate sale today that I had to share. He bought a beautiful bed and equally beautiful matching dresser. They were not inexpensive. He had to come back later to pick them up. As he was waiting for a relative to arrive with a trailer we got to talking. I commented on how beautiful the bed was. He told me that he had a bed at his house but that it was not the best. I said I’m sure he will be happy with this bed. He said “Oh, it’s not for me, it’s for my mom.” As the conversation progressed he told me his parents had a good bed, but he wanted his mom to have something beautiful, with a matching dresser, that she deserved it and he wanted to do this for her. He told me how his mom became sad when he talked about moving out, so he waited, and bought the house next door to her. He told me of a woman he dated who was not happy with the fact that he adored his mother. She gave him an ultimatum- “her or me.” He had one word to say to her- “goodbye.” This man works long hours at a hard manufacturing job. He was tired after working all night. He also goes to college. But his eyes lit up when he talked about his mom. His quest to bring her joy energized him. Not only did he disassemble and carry out this very heavy bed (it was a sleep number), but he was helping other people carry their things.
I felt privileged to get a glimpse into this young man’s heart. It pleased me greatly to witness this man honoring his mother. And it pleases God. After all, of all the commandments God gave throughout time, it made the top ten.
