🌿Burdock & the Lymphatic System

🌿Herbs work differently for everybody. This is why I think it’s important that we don’t look at plants purely through the lens of, “What can this plant do for me?”

When you pet a horse or spend time with a dog, you’re usually not thinking, “What benefit is this giving me right now?” Of course there are benefits, but that’s not the reason for the relationship.

I think plants can be similar.

Most people don’t think of plants in terms of relationship, but I believe their gifts go much deeper when we do. Plants are incredibly generous, and maybe even changing our language can change our relationship with them.

What if instead of asking, “What can you do for me?” we asked, “What gifts do you offer?”

When someone gives you a gift, gratitude naturally arises. That’s a different experience than simply taking something for its benefits. Perhaps our role in the relationship with plants is, in part, to receive their gifts with gratitude.

And a grateful heart has gifts of its own.

How might herbal medicine feel different if we approached it this way?

Khroma is now in its 11th year, and we are so grateful for every person who has supported us along the way.

One benefit of herbs that I rarely hear people talk about is how they help us make friends.
Plants are incredible connectors. There are so many ways to work with them. Through gardening, medicine making, cooking, farming, skincare, and more. None of us can do it all, and that’s part of the beauty. When we connect with others who have different skills and gifts, we all grow together.

This photo is one of my favorite memories with a dear friend. We blessed each other with plants during a ceremony at an herb festival in Costa Rica. I’m so grateful this was captured on camera so I can always remember how loved I felt in the moment.

Looking back, I realize that some of the most meaningful friendships in my life have come through a shared love of plants. The herbal community has introduced me to kind, generous, creative people who inspire me and remind me that healing is something we don’t need to do alone.

I am deeply grateful for the friendships and community that the plants have helped me cultivate.

My wish is that everyone experiences this kind of connection. You never have to be lonely if you have a garden or forest nearby. Even just a tree or some weeds in your back yard. I encourage you to go out and visit a community garden, take an herb class, join a plant walk, or just spend time in nature. Plants have a beautiful way of bringing us the friends we need.
