Coming THIS SUMMER - the 2nd annual
🥁Brazilian Bateria Directing Symposium!!🪘

June 3-5, 2026, Boulder, CO

Hosted on the beautiful CU Boulder College of Music campus, the CU Bateria Directing Symposium is specifically designed and intended for experienced percussionists and teachers to develop skills and knowledge in Brazilian percussion and learn the role of directing a bateria ensemble in a school, university or community music setting.

Founded and taught by Carl Dixon, Assistant Teaching Professor of Percussion at CU-Boulder, Director of the Boulder Samba School, Founder of Virada Drums, and director/teacher/arranger/clinician of Brazilian percussion music.

The symposium is open to professional and semiprofessional musicians, band directors and school percussion specialists, percussion teachers and current graduate students studying percussion. Participants should have experience playing percussion and either professional playing and/or teaching experience.

SECOND TO LAST NIGHT of Carnaval parades at the legendary riosapucai_ !! Before the final parades tomorrow night, let's check out the Chocalho!

* for a deep dive into this instrument, check out and their incredible skill/chocalho section at their escola de samba! *

In another clip from the work of our founder , you can see the basic function of a chocalho in a samba arrangement. Deceptively simple, a section of chocalho players makes up the textured foundation of a bateria. Think of it like shakers or tambourines in a band, but on a MASSIVE scale!

UPPER DIVISION PARADES for RIO CARNAVAL start tonight!!! Love and luck to our friends and respected masters and teachers in , , and all of the Especial groups competing tonight! To celebrate, here's some up close tamborim work!!

-The tamborim (tam-boh-reehng) is a small, high pitched drum used in various forms of samba. This .instrumentos here is played by our founder , with a .percussao baqueta (stick).-

--In the parade samba style, large sections of tamborim players interweave intricate rhythmic arrangements known as "desenhos" into the bateria's song or percussion piece.--

-Tamborims are so high pitched that a section can easily push or pull the tempo of an entire bateria, so precise and coordinated players and direction is key to any pro arrangement-

Caixas come in many different varieties (like this one from .instrumentos in Rio de Janeiro), and can be played many different ways -

- This caixa here is being played em cima (on top). The style frees the right hand to blast out complicated patterns with speed and power, while the height allows for a much punchier and clearer sound to travel above the bateria, as opposed to hip-level.

🥁Ever seen a Caixa? They're some of the loudest snares out there! And even louder with a pair of .instrumentos sticks!

Caixas go back to the beginnings of the samba schools, formerly being made of wood crates and leather. These days, many different styles of caixa (search "skeleton caixa Virada Drums") with different purposes make their way on to the avenida for Carnaval.
