Food for Kidz Event Coming to LUHS This Fall – SAVE THE DATE!
The following is a recent press release explaining the event! We need lots of help and hope you can join us for some fun and a rewarding couple of hours! All ages are welcome!
The multi-generational “Food for Kidz” food repackaging event held each October is back and will be held on October 23, 2021 at Lakeland Union High School!
This event, sponsored by the Lions District 27C2, which normally draws approximately 600 volunteers each October to the school to repackage bulk food into nutritious meal-size packets for families. These meals are then packed into cases for distribution to the local food pantries, back pack program (coordinated through Ascension Lutheran Church) and to needy starving children around the US and world.
Last year, the Lions District 27C2, who sponsored this event along with past event coordinators did ask for monetary donations only due to Covid-19 and there was no re-packaging event. That event raised over $18,000 to purchase the bulk food and supplied 216 cases which were packaged for 8 food pantries and the backpack program. Any excess food was then sent to areas of greatest need throughout the world by Food for Kidz.
Now with Covid-19 subsiding, we are definitely planning to do the in-person event. Our goal is 175,000-200,000 meals this year to be packaged in 4 short hours. It can be done with your support! The packaging event will supply hand sanitizer upon entering the building and we ask if anyone is feeling not well, that they stay home. Masks are at the discretion of the volunteer. Hats or hairnets must be worn while packaging food on heads and beards.
As volunteers enter the building, there will be boxes to bring “worn” tennis or athletic shoes with rubber cleats for the LUHS/AVW Social Studies/Foreign Language Projects. This project supports Veteran Honor Flights and Schools/Day Care in Dominican Republic.
Also during this event, Lions will have collection boxes for collecting: Eyeglasses, old cell phones & ink cartridges in support Lions Camp in Rosholt, WI. The glasses are refurbished and prescriptions noted for use around the world to aid those with vision problems. Don’t forget!
There will be two sessions on Saturday, October 23 and we will need 250-300 volunteers each session, so please sign up soon! The 2 sessions offered are: 8:00am-10:00am and 10:30am-12:30pm. Electronic sign ups can be easily be made at https://signup.com/go/nSMXZer or by calling Meghan Anderson at 715-614-3816 or Laura Bertch at 715-892-1204 if you have questions.
The Lions District 27C2 Hunger Committee Chair, Laura Bertch, is again asking for monetary donations to support the purchase of the bulk food this year. “This event would not happen without the dedication and service from our entire community: churches, organizations, businesses, individuals, youth and area Lions Clubs provide. Our hope is that this year will be an even stronger year for donations. The inspiring in-person involvement of this event, will help us reach the goal that we established for ourselves. Past committee chairs, volunteers and sponsors have dedicated themselves to this event for over 13 years.”
You can help either by a donation of any size and/or by signing up to volunteer for the “event set up” on Friday, October 22 at 3:30pm at LUHS, packaging on Saturday, 10/23, for either or both shifts or for clean up on Saturday after 12:30pm. Bring the kids to help and spend time helping others! Lions’ mission this year is to do 100 Acts of Kindness and this will be WOW with over 600 Acts of Kindness! Be the change in our community!
Fundraising has also begun already and will continue until October 1st! Donations of any size are welcome and will provide meals for the local food pantries. All donations made to Food for Kidz are tax deductible and all donation checks to this event should be made out to “Food for Kidz” and mailed to Food for Kidz, Attn.: Laura Bertch, PO Box 61, Boulder Junction, WI 54512.
