Schools across Kendall County are resuming, or will be resuming shortly, and with that, we will start to see buses out and about more regularly. Here are a few reminders about staying safe around buses and what to do when you see them on the road.

If you are driving, remember these simple rules:

Yellow flashing lights indicate the bus is preparing to stop to load or unload children. You should slow down and prepare to stop your vehicle.

Red flashing lights and extended stop arms indicate the bus has stopped and children are getting on or off. You must stop your car and wait until the red lights stop flashing, the extended stop-arm is withdrawn, and the bus begins moving before you can start driving again.

Even when lights aren’t flashing, watch for children, particularly in the morning or mid-afternoon, around school arrival and dismissal times. Be alert as you back out of a driveway, or drive through a neighborhood, school zone, or bus stop.

Vehicles traveling in both directions MUST STOP when on a two-lane road

When on a multi-lane road (4 or more lanes) or on a divided road, vehicles BEHIND the bus MUST STOP. Vehicles traveling in the opposite direction may proceed with caution.

PARENTS - talk bus safety with your children:

Your child should arrive at the bus stop at least 5 minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive. Teach them to play it SAFE:

*Stay at least ten feet — five giant steps — away from the curb.
*Always wait until the bus comes to a complete stop and the bus driver signals for you to board.
*Face forward after finding a seat on the bus.
*Exit the bus after it stops and look left-right-left for cars before crossing a street.

A former Aurora police officer has resigned in lieu of termination following an internal investigation into misconduct while on duty.

The investigation sustained several agency policy violations against former Officer Michael Gallagher, including substance abuse, tampering with evidence, and knowingly making untruthful statements during a criminal or internal investigation, or while testifying under oath.

The investigation determined Gallagher took narcotics that had been collected as evidence during a traffic stop while on duty and later ingested them while driving home from his shift, causing him to become incapacitated in his vehicle on a highway in Commerce City.

“Every member of this organization takes an oath to serve and protect this community with professionalism, compassion and integrity. What occurred here violated that oath, our policies, and the trust placed in us by the public,” said Chief Todd Chamberlain.

“I also want to be clear about our response. When these allegations came to light, we immediately began the process to hold this officer accountable. He was removed from duty and placed on paid administrative leave while a thorough internal investigation was conducted. That investigation recently concluded, serious policy violations were sustained, and his employment with the Aurora Police Department has ended.

The matter has also been referred to the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office for criminal charges.

There is no place in this department for this type of conduct. The actions identified in this investigation are fundamentally incompatible with the responsibilities and integrity required of a peace officer.

Our community should expect the highest level of professionalism from its police department, and I expect the same from every member of this organization. When misconduct occurs, we will investigate it, address it and hold our personnel accountable. That is our responsibility to this community and to the men and women of this department who honor their oath every day,” Chamberlain said.

AURORA MAN CHARGED IN FATAL HAMPSHIRE HIT-AND-RUN THAT KILLED 27-YEAR-OLD BICYCLIST

Kane County State’s Attorney Jamie L. Mosser and Hampshire Chief of Police Douglas Pann announce that Marcos Moreno is charged with the following offenses:
• Failure to Report a Crash Resulting in Death, Class 1 felony
• Leaving the Scene of a Crash Resulting in Death, Class 4 felony
• Obstructing Justice, Class 4 felony

State’s Attorney Mosser alleges that at approximately 12:40 a.m. on July 6, 2026, officers from the Hampshire Police Department were dispatched to the area of U.S. Route 20, between Big Timber Road and Gast Road, for a report of a traffic crash involving a bicyclist. Upon arrival, officers and emergency personnel located 27-year-old Ebony Calvillo, of Hampshire, who had been riding a bicycle. She was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Kane County Coroner’s Office conducted an autopsy and found the preliminary cause of death to be multiple injuries consistent with a bicyclist being struck by an automobile.

An investigation led by the Hampshire Police Department identified Marcos Moreno, 61, of Aurora, as the driver of the vehicle, a 1994 Chevy pickup truck. The complaint alleges that, after striking Ms. Calvillo, Moreno failed to stop his vehicle and report the accident to police. It also alleges that Moreno knowingly concealed the damaged truck by temporarily storing it in a parking lot and having it towed to his house.

Moreno is scheduled to appear in court on August 12, 2026, for a pretrial detention hearing.

The charges against Moreno are not proof of guilt. Moreno is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the state’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
