Most people don't know solar leasing is an option. Nick Cutsumpas aka "Farmer Nick" didn't either.

He found his installer through EnergySage, got competing quotes without having to track anyone down, and locked in a $125 monthly bill. Panels go up this spring at his Michigan homestead.

Most people don't know this is already happening in homes across the country.

A 40-pound home battery, no electrician, no permits, charges overnight when electricity rates are lowest and powers your home during peak hours when rates spike. Some EV owners are even using their cars directly.

But the part worth paying attention to: when thousands of these batteries connect together, they form what's called a virtual power plant. Utilities will actually pay homeowners to participate.

We went from begging the power company to keep our lights on to being the power company.

The grid doesn't have a power problem. It has a peak demand problem.

Instead of investing billions in new infrastructure for just ~50 peak hours a year, utilities should first tap into the rooftop solar and batteries homeowners already have. Spoiler: it can handle it.

Right now, Massachusetts has a chance to get this right with H.5175. Utilities should have to prove distributed energy *can’t* meet peak demand before investing in expensive upgrades that raise your rates.

If you live in MA, contact your state senator and urge them to include policies that prioritize solar, batteries, and virtual power plants over costly grid upgrades → https://energysage.biz/46HE19j

For decades, global conflicts have influenced what Americans pay for energy.

But today, the path to home energy independence is becoming clearer: solar, batteries, EVs, and electrified homes that give people more control over their bills.

A bill just passed the Massachusetts House to cut $1 billion from Mass Save—and it could raise your energy costs.

Every $1 invested in Mass Save returns ~$3 in lower bills and cleaner air. Cut the funding, and electricity demand goes up. Utilities build more infrastructure. Rates go up. More profit for them, more costs for you.

It's also a good time to consider upgrades like solar, heat pumps, and home batteries to capture state incentives while changes are up in the air.

The good news: it hasn't passed the state Senate yet. Contact your state senator and tell them to protect Mass Save funding. Find your rep: https://energysage.biz/46HE19j

📣 Our 22nd EnergySage Intel: Home Electrification Marketplace Report is here.

The second half of 2025 marked one of the most disruptive periods in residential energy history. The expiration of the 30% federal tax credit triggered a historic 205% surge in homeowner demand—reshaping equipment choices, installer capacity, and market dynamics nationwide.

For the first time, this edition expands beyond solar & storage to cover full home electrification, including EV charging and heat pumps.

The next chapter? Rising electricity costs, grid strain, and a growing demand for energy independence.
