From Kmart to Comeback: the Wake Up Call Every Business Needs!

Kmart once dominated the retail world, boasting nearly 2,500 stores at its peak in 1994. However, the big box behemoth failed to adapt to the changing commercial landscape, ultimately losing its mojo.

There are a myriad of reasons why Kmart failed (feel free to share your opinions in the comments). Yet, what’s crucial to note is the lesson we can glean from its downfall: no entity is too big to fail. Kmart serves as a cautionary tale that this can happen to any of us.

This almost happened to Stuckey’s. We’d lost our mojo after decades of outside ownership. However, our team is determined to prove that comebacks are possible, with a willingness to embrace change. That’s why we’re pivoting and focusing on what we do best: making the most delicious pecan snacks & candies you’ll find anywhere.

During a recent visit to their Miami store (one of two remaining in the U.S.), I found myself alone as the sole customer. I asked the clerk if there was any merchandise with the Kmart logo on it, and she offered me an extra employee lanyard. Moving forward, this is the lanyard I’m wearing at any trade show or conference – not just for its conversational value, but also as a reminder of the very real risks of failing to adapt.

So, thank you, Kmart, for the memories and the Blue Light Specials. But, more importantly, thank you for serving as a wake up all that we all need to evolve and adapt.
