The Ushpizin are 14 spiritual guests—seven men and seven women—invited to join the Jewish celebration of Sukkot, the festival that commemorates the Israelites’ 40 years of wandering in the desert after the Exodus from Egypt. Gad Almaliah z'l is a Legacy Member of our Guild. Our Legacy Member pages are meant to document and preserve information about the artists and artisans, now no longer with us, who created contemporary Jewish art and Judaica in the latter part of the 20th century and early part of the 21st century. This record will also provide an historical roadmap to learning about those artists and artisans whose contributions to Jewish art and culture are now part of the continuum of our artistic story.

Gad Almaliah z'l was born and raised in Jerusalem. He graduated from the Bezalel Academy of Art in Jerusalem and studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. The Mexican government sponsored Gad for two years to work with local artists at the University of Mexico. He was president of the Graphic Designers' Association of Israel for 15 years. In addition to designing stamps for the postal services of Israel, the United States and Mexico, Gad designed numerous posters and published several books on design. He designed coins and medals for the Israeli Government and created the emblem for the Six Day War. His logo design was chosen by jury for The American Guild of Judaic Art. He taught design on the university level in Israel and Canada in addition to serving on the faculties of School of Visual Arts and the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. Gad passed away in January of 2007. His studio still exists and more examples of his work can be found at www.thedesignlabboston.com.
