Not catching on the usual, don’t forget the basics. Size down leader, size down fly. Do you ever forget the basics?

These things matter - especially when we’re convinced they don’t.

We were out last month and no one was catching on pods of feeding fish and I’m not sure anyone else imagined to size down to one inch - but that’s likely the size of the bait they were eating. I didn’t think it until it was too late.

Go fishing. You just might see things.

Took two days to realize there were half a dozen flies in my pocket I didn’t know about.

Who else has this fleece pattern?! My wife hates it, so it’s the go-to when she’s not around.

The sun is rising on the 2023 striper season.

As seasons start they’re always filled with anticipation. What are your goals for the year? Forty inchers? Numbers? Slot fish? Catching them in different ways?

My goal is to learn more about beach fishing.

Given the state of the fishery, we’ll all be catching more, bigger fish and it’s critical we’re kind to these specimens so they can go and (hopefully) safely reproduce to save this fishery before moratoriums are necessary.

Meanwhile… still blanked as my buddies keep picking off their first of the year up here.

—What do you do when stripers are here but you spent all winter tying trout and warm water flies? You tie the fly you’ve caught your first stripers of the year on for the past few seasons.

Best fishing buddy in the game.

After our first was born, I’ll never forget when a friend told me to be sure to share my love of fishing with her - I didn’t hesitate when I asked “why wouldn’t I?” - only to learn that her father fished but never shared his passion with her - which she greatly wished he had. Take your daughters fishing.
